199 Words1 Page

In Charles Dickens’s novel “Great Expectations”, we are introduced to Pip, a young orphan who changes from being an oblivious boy to a very ambitious, young man. What great expectations means for Pip is to become a gentleman. Pip demonstrates his obstinate determination of becoming a gentleman, by attempting to obtain a higher education. He believes that receiving an education can be the best step in becoming uncommon, even if it will take a lot of effort. “It appeared to me that it would take time to become uncommon under these circumstances: nevertheless, I resolved to try it”(Dickens 77). This quote displays how tenacious he can be in receiving an education, even though he has an incompetent teacher who shows no effort in teaching her students.
