In ‘Ant and Grasshopper,’ the grasshopper wants food, but he doesn’t have any, so he goes to the Ant, only the Ant says that the grasshopper should have worked harder. In ‘The Richer, The Poorer,’ Lottie wants to work and earn money but, she turns old and isn’t able to work, so she makes her life better and doesn’t only saves her money, she spends it, then has to take care of her sister because she became poor after her husband died. Poverty doesn't have to effect the people's personalities that I consumes like most of the Youngers. Mama, Ruth, and Beneatha did not let being poor make them envy any one who had money. Every character in the novel has moments of feeling happy and endures a moment where they believe that they are about to achieve their dreams. Naturally everyone dreams of being a better person, having better things and in 1920’s America, the scheme of get rich quick. However each character had their dreams crushed in the novel mainly because of social and economical situations and their dream of happiness becomes a ‘dead dream’ leading them back to their ‘shallow lives’ or no life at all.
By doing this, Margaret receives empathy from the audience because the audience may recall a point in their lives where they were faced with similar challenges which were very difficult at the time but now they hold happy associations with those times.
