Grand Turk is an island located 550 miles southeast of Miami, Florida. Before the island was discovered by Christopher Columbus in 1942, it was home to two different tribes of Indians: the Tainos and Lucayans. The island of Grand Turk is now a member of the British overseas territory the Turks and Caicos Islands. Grand Turk is the capital of the Turks and Caicos Islands. Because it is not a part of the U.S. or a U.S. territory, a passport is required to enter Grand Turk and return to the U.S. I hope to experience the unique culture of Grand Turk. While the island is a British territory, the inhabitants still embrace their Indian heritage. I will learn much from the music, people, and art of Grand Turk. La Romana is a city and port located in the southeastern Dominican Republic. The city was founded in 1897 as an oil town, but the population began to grow rapidly in 1911 when a large sugar mill was established. As a result of this growth, La Romana is one of the three largest cities in the Dominican Republic. Because the population is so large, there are a variety of languages spoken in La Romana. In addition to Spanish, which is spoken widely across the Dominican Republic, Haitian Creole and Samaná English are also spoken is La Romana. …show more content…
