Many believe that women are the only ones diagnosed with body disorders, but men are also affected, but instead of wanting to be skinny they want to become bigger. In this paper I will argue that the government should restrict advertisers from promoting unhealthy male body ideals. First, I will argue that the promoting of unhealthy body ideals sets unrealistic goals for young men. Second, I will argue that unhealthy advertising is the leading cause of bigorexia among many young men. Third, I will argue that bigorexia causes many men to go to extreme measures to achieve unrealistic goals set by adversities. Many advertisers want us the consumer to buy their products, which consist of bodybuilding supplements, and clothing. So adversities seek for the best unrealistic physiques to promote their products so consumers will buy what they are pushing to sell. According to Dr. Stuart B Murray whom is a Clinical psychologist who specializes in the treatment of eating disorders, muscle dysmorphia and body image disorders says that many men get unrealistic body expectations from not only images from clothing brands such Calvin Klein, Hollister, but from the supplement brands which lead the cause. For example Ultimate Nutrition a supplemental brand currently sponsors six times Mr. Olympia Phil Heath who is know for taking anabolic steroids to achieve his insane physique. However for a beginner who wants to get bigger or even as big as Phil Heath are only aware of the supplements he takes not the steroids he secretly uses. Where’s your evidence for this last claim? With social media and advertisers creating this unhealthy image that many men want many of them will go to the gym to achieve their goals. However many men become diagnosed with bigorexia and will go to extreme measures to get to these ideal body images many advertisers have set. According to psychology instructor at Harvard Medical School and co-author of The Adonis Complex Roberto Olivardia says that men with their mindset set on looking like the athletes they see will often lead them to use of anabolic steroids. Olivardia also did a study with 3,400 high school boys in the 12th grade, and according to Olivardia he found that 6.6% reported to have taken steroids and that more than two-thirds of the boys started before the age of sixteen due to the people they saw on social media. According to Dr. Murray he also found that ninety percent of sufferers are men at the average age of onset is 19 and usually 16 years old teens are at the most risk due to advertisements they see now on social media.
