A government is not the foundation of a successful society. It consists of a group of individuals who work together to achieve a common goal: serving its people based on majority consent. In William Golding’s Lord of the Flies, the characters were exposed to an environment where a government was not implemented correctly. Initially, a democracy was approached, but the focus was later shifted onto dictatorship and gaining power. Due to this, the society began to deteriorate and the boys met their inevitable fate. It has been argued that government is ineffective as it is corrupt and money-driven; however, this is not always true. The United States Constitution is compiled of the sets of laws for its citizens, along with its consequences for breaking them. Because of stating the consequences, the citizens are able to make better decisions whenever they decide to break the law. In Lord of the Flies, due to the lack of government, Jack and his tribe violated laws to achieve their goals. For example, they forcefully stole Piggy’s glasses and murdered him. These crimes occurred mainly due to the lack of law enforcement on the island. If a strong government was implemented on the island, Jack and his tribe would not have attacked Piggy. Others may say that although government creates strict laws, there are thousands of people who continue to violate them illegally; however, one must keep in mind that the government has secret agencies which dedicate their time to find criminals that break these laws. The Bill of Rights consists of the basic human rights of citizens; it ensures the equality of all. In, Lord of the Flies, Piggy was violated the first and fifth amendments: the right of free speech and the right to live. In numerous occasions, he was denied the opportunity to hold the conch and express his opinion. Instead, he was criticized for his contradicting outlooks and he was prone to harsh treatment from the other boys; he was murdered by them. Due to the absence of a strong government, Piggy was denied his basic rights, was valued beneath the other schoolboys and was killed. While it is true that with little government involvement, people will have more liberty as it allows for citizens to do as they wished; however, one must keep in mind that government involvement, with institutions such as courts, is only there to protect the rights and liberties of its citizens.
