Imagine a hockey playing who can hold records, make it to the hall of fame, and be considered one of the best hockey players of all time, that would be Gordie Howe. Gordie Howe started playing hockey when he was 7 years old. He started playing in the NHL for the Detroit Red Wings when he was 18. He played in the NHL for 32 years and played in more than 1,500 games. Gordie Howe is easily one of the greatest if not the greatest hockey player of all time. Howe had a pretty rough childhood, but he overcame that and went to play in the NHL when he was older. To Begin With, “He was one of nine siblings. When Gordie was nine days old, the Howes moved to Saskatoon,where his father worked as a labourer during the Depression. He was born on Feb. 1st, 1882 in Compton, Quebec, and died on July 25, 1973 in Quebec City (Coucil, 13). Louis St. Laurent was raised in a mixed family, with a French - speaking father, and English - speaking Irish mother, and was fluently bilingual. He studied many years in law, where he graduated from law school, at Laval University in 1914, and had been a successful corporation lawyer (“St-Stephen, St. Laurent”). Laurent entered politics a lot later in his years, as he became older; however he still managed to have a large impact on Canada, and achieved many accomplishments. Louis St. Laurent was an extremely important, and well-respected politician, because he helped resolve the conscription crisis from 1940-1944 (,Pickersgill,14), and prevented the government and cabinet from collapsing, which would have caused the society to fall apart at the time, he was involved in the establishment of the Canada Council, which introduced support for Canadian arts, to help Canada separate from the influence of American culture (Jocelyn), and lastly he welcomed Newfoundland into confederation in 1949 (“Newfoundland History”), which was a large accomplishment because of the failures Many other politicians experienced in trying to do so before.
Gretzky was born on January 26, 1961 in Brantford, Ontario, Canada (Biography.com). He began skating at age two and started playing the game around age six, at this age he was playing hockey with older boys (Biography.com). Gretzky’s dad taught him how to skate in their backyard on a rink Wayne had built (Gretzky). He spent countless hours practicing how to skate, leading up to his shooting and stickhandling style which helped him in his professional career (Gretzky). Gretzky’s first year playing in a league he only scored one goal the whole season, however as time went on he got better (Gretzky). He finished his minor league career by scoring 378 goals in his final season (Gretzky). As a tennager Gretzky finished his one and only season with the OHA second in scoring, after he was first in the 1978 World Junior Championships (Gretzky). The 1920’s were a period of growth for the world economy as many people experienced great deals of increase with respect wealth as well as technological advancements and electricity, which became crucial living standard in countries such as Canada. A boom in the Canadian economy during this time was a result of middle and lower class families increasing their consumption of mass-produced consumer based items. During this time P.E.I maintained a relatively lower growth percentage then other Canadian Provinces as they experienced less of the economic boom. Those living in P.E.I, or the Islanders, were relatively more prone to hardship as most people located in the province at the time lived strenuous and labour filled lives.

On the day of October 29, 1929 the Great Depression had begun. This was due to the worth of the New York stock market falling intensely. The Great Depression was a time when Canadians suffered extraordinary levels of poverty due to unemployment. It shaped Canadian’s political views, and also their views about their country and role of the government. Canadians joined together in various new political parties, labor groups and other organizations that represented detailed regional, economic or political interest. Canadians scrambled through the crisis with a makeshift blend of private and public charity. Private Citizens in wealthier provinces recognized the dilemma of Saskatchewan and sent hundreds of carloads of fruit, vegetables and clothing westward. This showed that Canada is a crew of kind and supportive individuals.

It was a point in time where thousands of people lost their jobs, and even lost their homes because of the depressed economy. Business was booming in the early 1920s, but when companies tried to expand, and therefore issued stocks, the economy was thrown off. Some investors sold their stocks for high prices, and as a result, everyone else followed. With less of a demand, stock prices became fractions of what they used to be, and on October 29, 1929, the New York Stock Exchange collapsed, followed by the Toronto and Montreal Stock exchanges. This collapse of the stock markets caused a depression like which the world had never seen before. It was important for governments to find methods to deal with the depression, but the Canadian government wasn't very successful in its attempts to deal with the Great Depression.

Teenage life in Canada during the 1950’s is hard to understand unless having lived there. With this new demographic, many things had to be created in order to satisfy this demographic, such as clothing, music, rules, and schools. Unique aspects of teenage life in this era include a lot of rules, the movie theatre, rock n roll and the way they communicated to each other. Issues teenagers faces include marginalization, condemnation and disapproval. The new demographic helped Canada as it made the “children” demographic smaller, and it gave the teenagers more freedom, independence and they finally felt as they could have their own “stuff” as they would call their music, their clothes, their friends their social life etc.
It is evident that Saul had found his escape in hockey since he was first introduced to the game. He mentions that "[a]t night in the dormitory...I would get out of bed and stand in the aisle...mimic the motion of stickhandling. I pictured myself...with the puck tucked...on the blade of my stick...I'd stand there, arms held high...and I would not feel lonely or afraid, deserted or abandoned..." (Wagamese 62) It is clear to see that Saul is already beginning to feel less alone even though he has not started to play on the ice yet. He finds comfort within the concept and idea of the game that helps to make the horrific experiences at St Jerome's bearable and somewhat pleasant. The game transports him to a different time and place that pushes all of the negativity in his mind
Before the 1980 Winter Olympics began, the US Olympic hockey team was not expected to do as well as they did. They had many powerhouse teams to beat and the team was just a bunch of college kids who wanted to play hockey. In the end, they had performed one of the greatest upsets in the history of hockey by defeating the USSR, the whom many thought of as the greatest hockey team in the world.
Don grew up playing hockey, for he was playing in the OHL by the time he was 17. Unfortunately, Don never made it big, but he managed to make his way around the minor league system for a good 15 years. He played a few games in the NHL, attended many training camps, but nothing to brag about. But, that is where Don is different, for he will brag about his days on the ice. He will let every one know about his toughness, grit and determination. After his days as a minor league player, Don was hired on as the head coach for the Boston Bruins, where he experienced much success including a coach of the year award in 1976. It was in 1984 where Don found his true calling though, for it was that year where he accepted a job on the popular Hockey Night in Canada.
