Picture books are books in which both words and illustrations are essential to the story’s meaning (Brown, Tomlinson,1996, Pg.50). There are so many different kinds of children’s books. There are books for every age and every reading level. There are many elements that go into picture books such as line and spacing, color and light, space and perspective, texture, composition and artistic media. Picture books are an essential learning element in today’s classroom.

Baby Books
Baby books are simply designed, brightly illustrated, and have durable pictures that are intended for children from the ages of birth to two. Goodnight Moon by: Margaret Wise Brown and illustrated by Clement Hurd is a great example of this. This book fits under the baby books category because it emphasizes routines that are familiar with an infant or toddler in their daily lives. For example, this book talks about how the little boy says goodnight to everything before he goes to sleep. Children at this age have routines that they do before they go to bed so they can relate to the book. An activity that I would do after reading this book to my class would be a Goodnight Moon sorting activity. Ten Eggs in a Nest by: Marilyn Sadler and illustrated by Michael Fleming is a great example of this. This books fits in this category because it makes counting fun for kids and the illustrations allow to kids to participate in counting throughout the book. Children will not only think this book is funny but they will learn counting and even some easy addition too.
