Many people each year die from suicide, and a popular way of doing so is jumping off a bridge. Experts say that many depressed people want their last moments to be monumental, so they seek out landmarks known for its infamy (DiBlasio). People see jumping to their death as an easy way out because it’s quick and there’s no suffering that comes along with it. However, most of the time people don’t just get on the bridge and jump, there are moments in between standing on the edge and jumping where suicidal people may take a second to think. Crisis signs have been put up on the bridge that read, “There is hope. Make a call” and “The consequences of jumping from this bridge are fatal and tragic”, in hopes to make people take a second thought on what they’re doing. It’s possible that reading this could be the sign someone was looking for to change their mind, however these signs don’t significantly help decrease the rate of suicides. People around the world have been trying to come up with ways to prevent suicide, however, there is still about 20-35 suicides a year in San Francisco alone (DiBlasio). Although it’s true that not all people will use it, having a phone right at hand is perfect for those who are contemplating their suicide. Sometimes when depressed, people don’t have anyone to talk to about how they feel, or don’t feel as if they can talk to people who are close to them. Placing a few phones around the bridge provides a last minute opportunity to talk about their thoughts and be convinced not to take fatal actions. Florida’s state Sen. John Grant, also believes that having these crisis phones installed will make bridges look “less attractive to people complimenting suicide”
