There is no question that today’s political landscape comes with many questions, concerns, and fears for our future. With the country divided and tensions rising seemingly every day, government is increasingly coming under scrutiny and perception are far from favorable these days. I think it is important that we reexamine the roles of government and understand how and why it operates as it does. I think the first and most important aspect of modern government is the idea of accountability. In class, we discussed the idea of a “golden circle of accountability.” In summary, this idea realizes that all aspects of government have a civic duty to serve society. In this regard, they are “accountable,” through the many levels of the golden circle, each ring has this duty to serve. It may not be directly to the public, but each facet is accountable for providing benefit to the greater whole. Within the levels, I think that there are two that stick out in particular. The reason why I find this branch so important is because it is the channel through which most people will see government in action. The majority of people living in our nation are going to see much of their news regarding politics by observing the cabinet, public administrators, and especially our president. These executives have the power to shape our ideologies simply through their speech and mannerisms. An unpopular president can influence public opinions on government as a whole significantly, simply through his own work. This makes the job of the executive branch multidimensional. They must balance carrying out the law and keeping public opinion on the greener side. Legislative and Judicial work is just as important in the long run, but with the eyes of the nation on the executive branch at all times, it gains a slight edge in terms of importance in my
