As a child, I was always curious about how God was referenced as “Father, Son and Holy Spirit.” How is that possible I would ask? My grandmother would state, “God is three persons who we have belief in.” Even after that response, I was still somewhat confused, but I knew that if grandma was taking me to church every Sunday and we read the Bible everyday then it had to be of some importance. As I grew older, my understanding of what is called the Trinity became clearer. The Christian doctrine of the Trinity interprets God as three persons: the Father, the Son (Jesus), and the Holy Spirit. Although, this doctrine is said to be a mystery beyond most human comprehension, it suggests that the nature of God is a relationship of love. I would explain it like this to my niece. I may be Aunt, Jody and Mom, although these are three names for one person, it is three ways of thinking about the same person. Correct? So think of God in the same way. God is three persons. Founded approximately 2,000 years ago by Jesus Christ, Christianity is one of the most prominent religions in world history.
The person of Jesus is what Christianity is centered on. He was born during a time when there was immense religious and political crisis in Israel under Roman supremacy. Many Jews believed they were living in the “end times” and trusted that God would intervene in a dramatic way that would include the appearance of the Messiah. Beginning in his late twenties for approximately three years, Jesus’ ministered teaching and healing. At Passover time, he was arrested in Jerusalem by authorities who believed him to be a threat. Christianity developed monastic and mystical movements and formed great figures, during the Middle Ages. The vast branches of Eastern Orthodox, Roman Catholic, and Protestant Christianity were composed due to controversies over doctrine and church structure. With differing understandings, all Christians practice baptism and recognize the Lord’s Supper. Holidays, such as Easter and Christmas, are celebrated amongst Christians marking significant times in the life of Christ and the early church. Christianity has had a philosophical effect in architecture, painting, sculpture, and music. With the expansion of science and the changing roles of women, Christianity continues to face challenges from the modern world while affecting history.
