Judaism is one of the world’s oldest religions dating back approximately four thousand years, with around 14.2 million followers today (Itamar Eichner, 2015). The concept of God in Judaism is monotheistic and hence has a belief in one almighty God. Its traces its origins to the covenant or agreement between God and Abraham, the father of the Jewish religion. Their faith is very strong, as it is seen in their daily life, core beliefs, rituals and celebrations.
From a very young age, Jews are encouraged to bring God into all activity’s, they do this though prayer. (Doreen fine, 1995). Any action or activity is an opportunity for them to pray, many prayers have been created over the years to help with any occasions. An example of this is the Shema prayer, traditionally said in the morning or just before going to sleep. It asks God to send his most important angels, the archangels Michael, Gabriel, Uriel and Raphael to guard him while he sleeps. (see appendix 1) Prayer …show more content…

It is simply the coming of age ceremony were they are able to view the commandments of God, For a boy, their bar mitzvah takes place when he reaches thirteen. He becomes bar mitzvah, which means ‘son of the commandments’. On the first Shabbat of the week, he must take part in the service, reading the torah in Hebrew in front of family and friends. He is now a ‘man’, being able to take part in all religious and legal obligations of an adult. For example, he now should wear a tefullin- two small black leather boxes with leather straps – each weekday morning (Penney, 2001), (see appendix 7). In progressive synagogues, there is no difference between the services held, the only difference is that she must be twelve years of age.
