Goal Statement: Multiculturalism and Education
As discussed in the problem statement, supporting multiculturalism in the classroom is a quite challenging task for an educator. Banks, J. and Banks, C. [1] underline that the key idea behind the multicultural education is to ensure that students from different backgrounds should have equal opportunities to study and be educated. In order to achieve this goal each educator must focus on development of new courses, programs, and principles that will allow students, regardless their gender, ethnic or racial group, to improve their background, demonstrate knowledge about different cultures, make their own contribution to the society. The multicultural education expects that student will develop a mutual respect and become effective citizens in a diverse U.S. society. Numerous objectives of the multicultural education set a number of responsibilities for an educator. Some of those responsibilities include, but are not limited to: avoid potential cavities in the learning process, provide a friendly atmosphere in the multicultural classroom, support collaboration between students, clearly establish course expectations, and ensure that students will be able to apply the gained knowledge in their professional future. Of course, not everyone is able to efficiently cope with all those tasks. Therefore, it is a quite difficult aim to become an effective educator in a multicultural classroom. However, teaching plays a very important role in the U.S. society and around the world, as it passes knowledge from one generation to another. A good educator should assure the students that the subject to be presented will be useful for everyone irrespectively of their religion, personal views, and
