The topic of globalization has ignited significant deliberation as the idea and practice of globalization begins to imbed itself more and more into the modern world. Even though forms of globalization have taken place in the past, the overall prevalence of globalization is beginning to show widespread results and is becoming an apparent topic. Due to the sensitive nature of globalization, multiple viewpoints on the issue have arisen that are either in opposition of the expansion of globalization, or are in absolute favor of expanding the influence of cultures among one another. A popular counter argument to globalization is that it promotes the wealthier individuals and oppresses the poor, but in many instances this argument can be proven false according to Amartya. He argues that exchange and trade will in fact promote positive economic reinforcement, but the only apparatus hindering the poor from becoming affluent is the fair share and distribution of globalization benefits. The poor may in fact become a diminutively richer, but in order to truly excel, the potential fair share must be divided among the parties involved equally. Sen argues that globalization should not be deemed Westernization, but a potential outlet for immense global benefits through global integrations. Amartya promotes the idea that globalization has provided a copious amount of prospects in the past that are still rippling in today’s time, while also analyzing the underlying problem. Without globalization, as discussed in class, many of the provisions and luxuries we have today would not be available, or would be astronomically high valued in price. Everyday products such as clothing, which is made and developed across multiple nations, is priced significantly lower than if they were made in the United States due to cheaper labor costs. Labor abundant nations need globalization in order to provide work for their nations people and if it wasn’t for foreign labor, everyday products would reach prices of which the average consumer couldn’t afford. This labor also allows foreign regions to develop higher standards of living and provide products to the rest of the world for affordable prices. Globalization allows specialization between countries and is able to improve the economic, cultural, and standard of living state of the interacting societies. As discussed in our in class debate, globalization has promoted Non-Governmental Organizations (NGO’s) to respond to people in need of aid and even disband violent conflict, thus saving lives and promoting a newly found level of global peace.
