The Epic of Gilgamesh follows the four adventures of the Urukian king, Gilgamesh and what he discovers about the relationships between life, death, gods, and man. While his enlightenment is achieved through perseverance and persistence, Gilgamesh receives much of his strength from other characters throughout the course of his journey. Among the most important is Enkidu, who gains the affection of the king after succumbing in a brawl. The following essay aims to examine their relationship and how it contributes to the character development of Gilgamesh. More specifically, how the ambiguous love between Gilgamesh and Enkidu alters the life of Gilgamesh.

This rejection coupled with the obvious companionship between Gilgamesh and Enkidu begs question as to why Gilgamesh rejected Ishtar. Although he comments that he does not want his fate to be the same as her past lovers, it is arguable that Gilgamesh rejects the companionship of Ishtar because he is already consumed by his love for Enkidu. This love culminates at the death of Enkidu when Gilgamesh is overwhelmed by the loss of “[his] brother, [his] friend, whom [he] loved so dearly, who accompanied [him] through every danger- Enkidu, [his] brother, whom [he] loved so dearly… (Mitchell 167)” At this point in the story Gilgamesh, out of desperation and fear of his own death, realizes that he cannot “bear this sorrow that gnaws at [his] belly, this fear of death that restlessly drives [him] onward (Mitchell 159).” This said it is evident that Gilgamesh’s destiny was altered by the love he had for Enkidu for if Enkidu had not died Gilgamesh may have never achieved his destiny to search for eternal life.
