In the journal “The Contemporary Theory of Metaphor – now new and improved!” the author Gerard Steen talks about new some ideas in the study of contemporary metaphor. The author explains “[T]hat metaphorical models in language, thought, and communication can be classified as official, contested, implicit, and emerging, which may offer new perspectives on the interaction between social, psychological, and linguistic properties and functions of metaphor in discourse”(Steen 1). With the right set of tools one can create additions to their home or fix them. A tool is something that one must us with e there hand. In a computer science lecture called Metaphors We Compute By the college Professor John M. Lawler, a comparison is made between computers and tools. The professor explains that “A machine is a form of tool, and that's an extension of our manipulative ability -- functionally, something you use in your hand” (Lawler). This refers to the idea that a computer is a tool like a hammer or a hand saw. We make things with them and they one perform work when a person is using them. We’ve seen them in Programming languages, user-interface, hardware, web applications, and PC care. The metaphors that we’ve seen can all be characterized in the metaphorical models listed by Gerald J. Steen. The emerging metaphorical model is the one that I believe relate the most to computer science. Not only that but when we look at computer science metaphors under the emerging model we can see that when computer scientists socially converse with metaphors they are often comparing to housework.
