“Hidden Intellectualism” written by Gerald Graff, is a compelling essay that presents the contradicting sides of “book smarts” and “street smarts” and how these terms tied in to Graff’s life growing up. Graff felt like the school was at fault that the children with more “street smarts” were marked with the reputation of being inadequate in the classroom. Instead of promoting the knowledge of dating, cars, or social cues, the educational system deemed them unnecessary. Gerald Graff thought that “street smarts” could help people with academics. When Gerald Graff was younger he and his friends would have various debates about sports including what team had the best pitcher in baseball. Graff pointed out that while having these arguments with his friends, they would have evidence to support their thoughts whether it be using statistics to find batting averages or using their argumentative abilities in general to support their opinion. This proves that even people who do not do the best in school are capable of brilliant things, the school system just needs to encourage students to use their hobbies to enhance their academics. Instead of dividing the different forms of intelligence, book and street smarts could merge and grow into a more detailed educational system that can help not just with academics, but with life itself. While it is good to know proper grammar, knowing about dating, sports, or cars can actually get people farther than anticipated in life. My parents thought that hiding things from me would help me make smarter decisions. At a younger age that may have worked, but now when a certain situation comes my way, I have no clue what to do. If both learning styles were taught in school instead of the education system always leaning toward only academics, it would have been easier for me to adapt to adulthood now. I openly admit that I lack common sense now because I was always pressured to read the assigned books, meet ridiculous deadlines and get the best grades. I look back on it now and while it may have looked better on college applications that I went to a fancy county school, deep down I feel like I will not be ready to live on my own as quick as I should. I blame the school system for millennials not being fully prepared to enter adulthood. This essay pointed a lot of this out to me because before, I always thought that street smarts were more inferior than intelligence because of what I learned in the classroom. But now, I realize that those who were exposed to more and did not hide behind a book are probably a lot more prepared in the real world than the college scholar I aspired to
