George S. Patton as a young child had always admired his ancestors ("George Patton Biography"). He heard the numerous stories of his own relatives taking part in the Civil war and the American Revolution ("George Patton Biography"). In addition, Patton wanted to follow in the same footsteps. Accomplishing his childhood dream, George S. Patton is remembered as one of the most successful combat generals in U.S history ("George Patton Biography"). He took part in WWI and WWII ("George Patton Biography"). Having to be quick in battle and come up with ideas. This leads us to his quote, “If everyone is thinking alike, then somebody isn't thinking.” Having to think quickly during the war General Patton had to have many ideas on board. Patton wants to make the point across that it takes critical thinking rather than going off of one specific idea. This goes for everyone, that in order to be successful, it is necessary to be different when it comes to thinking (“Most Valuable Skills”). Since the dawn of time, people have thought differently, acted differently, and fared differently from each other. That everyone is different and it is alright to put one’s own ideas and viewpoints out in the open. The point is when everybody goes off of one person’s idea, and then nobody else is thinking on his or her own. In the business world or anything that involves thinking is one of the most valuable skills each individual needs to have (“Most Valuable Skills”). It's exceedingly important for a person to express what he or she thinks. It creates an impression on the person or individuals one is talking to (“Most Valuable Skills”). General Patton as born in Virginia in the late 1860s and was raised by both his parents with his sister. He had a good relationship with his family, not many fights or arguments. He was brought up in the South and was taught to be a real gentlemen. This is why he is considered not only one of the United States greatest generals, but also a great person himself. He was in the Olympic games in Stockholm and served in West Point military school. During the first World War he served in the 304th tank brigade and lead his platoon to many quality wins in Europe. In World War II, he was leader of the 504th platoon in Morocco and then moved over to the European front and lead his troops to victory and one of the biggest battles at the Battle of the Bulge.
Throughout The Wars, there are many characters introduced that have their own personal internal or even external battles that they face during their time being represented in the novel. Two such characters are Robert Ross who is depicted as the main character of the book and his mother Mrs. Ross who also plays a large part in the story. These two face similar and different wars that they lose and win at different turns. The mother must face her internal struggle with sending her son off to war to most likely die in the name of king and country. She may not have sent him, but he did choose to go and she couldn’t make him change his mind this led to many scenes of her coming to grips with losing her second child in only a few years after her eldest daughter Rowena, who was very sickly and delicate, had a bad fall and passed away.
In May of 1962, General Douglas MacArthur gave his gratitude to the United States Military Academy at West Point for his military service and for his acceptance of the Thayer Award. The speech was a key time for MacArthur to leave his legacy. With his speech “Duty, Honor, Country,” MacArthur shared his beliefs that one should follow the the words duty, honor, and country, because they helped him succeed throughout life and his military life. MacArthur thought that if the cadets heard of how he became successful, they would follow after him. On May 12th, he was successful in doing so as his speech consisted of rhetorical appeals which showed the importance of the three words he followed during his life.

During the War for American Independence, 78 men were commissioned as general officers into the Continental Army by the Continental Congress. Many of these generals commanded troops with differing levels of competence and success. George Washington is typically seen as most important general, however throughout the war a number of his subordinates were able to distinguish themselves amongst their peers. One such general was Nathanael Greene. At the end of the Revolutionary War, Greene would become Washington’s most important subordinate, as demonstrated by Edward Lengel’s assessment of Greene as “the youngest and most capable of Washington’s generals.” Washington and Greene developed a strong, positive and close relationship between themselves. Greene began his life in the military after having been raised a Quaker. With limited access to literature and knowledge in his younger years, Greene became an avid reader which equipped him with the knowledge necessary to excel as a general during the war. Through his devoted study of military operations, firsthand experience and natural abilities as a soldier, Greene became an excellent military commander. He would become known for his successful southern campaign, during which, he loosened British control of the South and helped lead the war to its climax at Yorktown. Throughout the war, he was involved in a number high profile battles where he built a reputation of being an elite strategist who also understood unconventional warfare, logistics, and the importance of military-civil affairs and had a natural political/social acumen. Imagine a world in which there are no books, and every piece of information you learn comes from a screen. In Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury, this nightmare is a reality. In Fahrenheit 451, Guy Montag is a fireman who instead of putting out fires burns books. He eventually meets Clarisse who changes his outlook on life and inspires him to read books (which are outlawed). This leads to Guy being forced on the run from the government. The culture, themes, and characters in Bradbury’s novel Fahrenheit 451 construct a dystopian future that is terrifying to readers.
Both authors believe that thinking critically before doing the work will make people successful. Graff states, “…… how to make an argument, weigh different kinds of evidence, move between particulars and generalizations, summarize the views of others, and enter a conversation about ideas” (383). Author tries to proclaim that to be a critical thinker, we should be able to get all the information and need to analyze it very carefully. We should be able to figure out what is right and what is wrong. Doing nothing will not make us critical thinkers, but thinking deeply and figuring out options will make us critical thinkers. In addition to, Gldwell also supports Graff that in order to be a critical thinker, we must be able to find the best promising way to solve the perilous situations. Graff mentions, “But if you think there are still lunch counters out there that need integrating it ought to give you pause” (327). The author tried to suggest that we have to think about every aspect and should try to figure out the best possible solution to a problem. From the text, Gladwell gives an example of four college students who started protesting because they were not allowed to sit at the lunch counter. This can be used as an example of critical thinking, because the four students denied to leave, and decided to start a protest and later on many peoples supported them. If they couldn’t think critically, they wouldn’t have come with the plan or perhaps, they could have just left the lunch counter. Both authors Gladwell and Graff believe we have to analyze things carefully to be a critical
John F. Kennedy once said “mankind must put an end to war before war puts an end to mankind.” (Brainy Quotes) This quote describes the message Timothy Findley was trying to convey using the four elements in his novel “The Wars.” The four elements are water, fire, earth, and air. Findley uses Water to show the reader that as Robert goes through the war he slowly loses both his freedom and his clarity. Fire conveys the message that as the war continues people change how they show passion, and how some of the soldiers have lost their humanity. Earth shows the reader that the Earth is human’s home which is supposed to support and protect them, but in times of war, it does the opposite. How does one achieve happiness? Money? Love? Being oneself? Brave New World consists of only 3 different ways to achieve happiness. Each character of the brave new world will have his or her different opinion of the right way to achieve happiness. In his novel Brave New World, Aldous Huxley explains many people achieve happiness through the World State’s motto – “community, identity, stability”, soma, and conditioning.

For a united nation to prosper, its people must overcome obstacles and take on numerous responsibilities. Throughout our lives, there are problems occurring continually in our world related to war and combat. During these times of hardship, we must remind ourselves to persevere and continue to defend the country. In addressing the Sylvanus Thayer Award on May 12, 1962, at the city of West Point, New York, General Douglas MacArthur urged Americans to remember the major responsibilities we have as Americans in his speech Duty, Honor, Country. With a position of authority, MacArthur powerfully stated that America will only survive through winning wars and fulfilling our duties. His main priority was to defend the nation, respect the nation, and prosper in that vast nation, otherwise remarked as three key terms: duty, honor, and country. Through the use of rhetorical devices, MacArthur expresses the theme that Americans should defend the country sturdily and carry on its numerous objectives by means of his moral code: “Duty, Honor, Country”.

Montag, the main character of Ray Bradbury’s novel Fahrenheit 451, learns to realize that there is more to living then staring at a screen. Guy Montag is initially a fireman who is tasked with burning books. However, he becomes disenchanted with the idea that books should be destroyed, flees his society, and joins a movement to preserve the content of books. Montag changes over a course of events, while finding his true self and helping others.
Thomas Gray, a poet from the eighteenth century, coined the phrase “Ignorance is bliss” in his poem, Ode on a Distant Prospect of Eton College (1742), and three centuries later, this quote is commonly used to convey the message that sometimes, being ignorant of the truth can cause happiness, and knowledge can actually can be the source of pain or sadness. However, in Ray Bradbury’s Fahrenheit 451, this phrase is taken very literally, and knowledge is feared to the extent where books are considered illegal. Throughout The Hearth and the Salamander, Guy Montag, the main character, experiences a drastic change wherein he begins to realize that there is power in knowledge, and that this intelligence has the potential to be worth more than the so-called “bliss” that ignorance can bring.
As an Eagle Scout there is a saying that goes, “Once an Eagle, always an Eagle”. That carries certain privileges with it, but also certain responsibilities. As an Eagle Scout, one would never want to do something to tarnish the reputation of themselves or other Eagle Scouts. The same is true for those of us who work in ministry. Whether I like it or not, many people will put me on a pedestal. That means that I need to hold myself to a higher standard than I do anyone else. It is like Paul said in 1 Corinthians 8:13, “Therefore, if what I eat causes my brother or sister to fall into sin, I will never eat meat again, so that I will not cause them to fall.” I do not want to do anything to make another person stumble and the only way to ensure that is by holding myself to a higher standard. A good example of this was when I was a smoker. I made sure that I was not smoking within sight of anyone from the congregation I was serving. I began to realize that even hiding it was not a good idea and I finally quit.
Savagery can come from anywhere, even the most ‘civilized’ places, such as Europe. In reality, civility depends on the location and the morals of the people. The idea of a stable ‘civil’ society could easily collapse as a consequence of greed and power. Heart of Darkness tells the story of Marlow, a sailor, and his journey on a steamboat through the Congo River. He shares this introspective journey with three other people aboard a ship referred to as the Nellie. Joseph Conrad’s Heart of Darkness, a parable, reflects how greed and power always triumph over morality, especially in a place where civility no longer exists.
