What is the American dream today? The American dream today is to have plenty of money to where you don’t have to be worrying about any problems. The American dream in the 1930s was to own your own house on a small farm with farm animals running around. George and Lennie are facing the problem of not owning their own house, so they are faced with multiple conflicts such as having to move across the country for work. In the novel Of Mice and Men George and Lennie’s American dream is to work on their own farm and to harvest their own crops and not having to work for anyone else. Throughout the novel she is known as a tramp and flirts heavily with lennie when he's in the barn petting his puppy. Curley's wife puts lennie's hand on her head to touch and feel how soft her hair but she didn't know how bad of an idea that was. A giant rabbit jumped out of Lennie's head and started talking to him in Lennie's voice and said George will be so mad at you. George comes out of the brush and Lennie looks at him and asks if he was mad at him george says no. lennie asks george to tell him how we are getting a house with rabbits and george says turn and look out across the lake and imagine it, Lennie does so and george pulls out a luger pistol. George says no one will harm you or steal from you any more George puts the gun up near lennie's head and pulls the trigger. In this novel one of the obstacle is Curley's wife. She creates a big problem for all of the guys at the stable buck and evently is what get Lennie killed. A friendship is not all they have together, Lennie and George have dreams. Lennie and George have worked up the idea of owning their own piece of land together. Lennie wants to tend the rabbits (Steinbeck 11) and George just wants to be his own boss (Steinbeck 14). The only problem with their dream is that it is unrealistic. Lennie dreams of living on a wide open ranch with George where he tends to the fluffy little rabbits he loves so much. Nevertheless, Lennie sadly never reaches his ultimate goal as his flaw finally becomes his fatal flaw. Lennie kills Curley 's wife by shaking her so hard that her neck breaks. He does not kill her on purpose but Lennie does not know his own strength. He is only shaking her like that because he wants her to stop yelling. In the same way that George and Lennie had a dream, Curley’s wife had one too; for Curley’s wife, living on farm with a bunch of men that loathe her, and an annoying husband who she hates, is not exactly what she hoped achieve in life. If she was treated better, she would not have wanted someone to understand and care for her, because Curley would have done that for her.
