The book of Genesis reveals the mystery of how the universe, human and all the creatures are originated. From the beginning, God has his plan for the whole world. This book tells us a story about how God chose Abraham and his descendants as his people and why he made a covenant with them. Through the story of creation and Abraham’s family, it clarifies that God is the Creator, Governor and Preserver of all things. The main units of Genesis will be traced with the outline below.

1. Creation of heavens and the earth (1:1-2:25)
2. The original sin and the consequence of the sin (3:1-24)
3. The beginning of civilization (4:1-5:32)

c. Adam’s family line from Adam to Noah (5:1-32)
4. The Flood and the New Creation (6:1-9:29)
a. The reason of the Flood; human sins (6:1-13)

Actually, covenant scenes with Abram(Abraham) are found in several areas. Genesis 12:1-3 describes about God’s blessings upon Abram and his descendants. Genesis 15:18-21 describes that God made a promise to Abram for the Promised Land. Both are unconditional covenant, which God didn’t ask Abram to do something special in order to receive those blessings. Later on, God gave Abram the rite of circumcision as a special sign of the covenant. This covenant is conditional, so that every male of Abraham should be circumcised.
