‘’I would be quite satisfied if my novels did no more than teach my readers that their past was not one long night of savagery from which the first Europeans acting on God’s behalf delivered them’’. ( Morning yet) Chinua Achebe wrote stories so that people would get knowledge out of it. That being said him making Things Fall Apart was not for entertainment, but it showed us the gender-role of males in females at the time. Males are the focus of my research, there is two great protagonists that will be discussed in this paper Okonkwo and Jay Gatsby. How does the characterization of men and their role in society in the Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald compare to Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe in terms of success, failure and mindset.
Also the statue of wealth was different in the two stories because, currency was different in the stories the Great Gatsby it was modern so the currency was money. In Things fall apart it was a simpier point of time so they didn 't have all the luxury cars and things like in the Great Gatsby. However the currency in Things Fall Apart was yams because money wasn 't yet used so they used yams as a form of currency. Since the currency was the not the same, and there was two different time period it is hard to be able to tell who of the two was wealthier. The thing that we do know is that they are both wealthy for their era of time. As a young man of eighteen he had brought honor to his village by throwing Amalinze the cat. Amalinze was the great wrestler who for seven years was unbeaten, from Umuofia to Mbaino (Chinua 1). Okonkwo throwing a man that was never beaten in seven years just shows how powerful of a man he was. To crown it all he had taken two titles and had shown incredible prowess in two inter-tribal wars (Chinua 5). Every Man wants to be respected for if you are respected then people will not just mess with you ,since they know something will happen to them Okonkwo and Gatsby were well respected. And so although Okonkwo was still young ,he was already one of the greatest men of his time Age was respected among his people, but achievement was revered. As the elders said, if a child washed his hand he could eat with kings. Okonkwo had clearly washed his hands and so he ate with kings and elders (Chinua 5). The people of Umuofia had so much respect for Okonkwo that they let him eat with them that is huge ,normally children or younger people in there society didn’t eat with king’s and the elders of the tribe. By eaten with those elders it means that they didn’t view him as a child, they viewed him as a equal that could do all the things that they can. The leaders trusted Okonkwo so much they they gave him the duty to look after Ikemefuna who was a sacrifice to Umuofia so a war wouldn’t start (chinua 6). This task wouldn’t be just giving to anyone ,because it affects how other tribes and things will view Umuofia if they just let the boy go. Then the village will be viewed as weak and other people will feel they can get away with anything. Jay Gatsby was respected in a different way than Okonkwo, Gatsby was not known by everybody like Okonkwo. Jay Gatsby was respected because of
Okonkwo is one of the most powerful men in the Ibo tribe. In his tribe, he is both feared and honored. This is evident by this quote, "Okonkwo was well known throughout the nine villages and even beyond... [He] brought honor to his tribe by throwing Amalinze the Cat..."(3) This suggests that in Okonkwo's society, power is attained by making a name for yourself in any way possible, even if that means fighting and wrestling to get your fame. Although honor is a good thing, when people have to fight to gain it, it becomes an object of less adoration. Okonkwo's "prosperity was visible in his household... his own hut stood behind the only gate in the red walls. Each of his three wives had her own hut... long stacks of yams stood out prosperously in [the barn]... [Okonkwo] offers prayers on the behalf of himself, his three wives, and eight children." (14) Okonkwo has also worked and tended to his crops in a very zealous fashion, and drives everyone around him to work as hard as he does. Because of this, he earns his place as one of Umuofia's most powerful men. In many cultures, a big family is a source of pride. Although Okonkwo is not always pleased by his children and wives, it also brings him a source of pride to have three wives and eight children. Large families mean that the head of the family is able to support all of them. Okonkwo's devotion to his crops and family gives to him the respect that any father and husband deserves, and in his culture, being able to fight and kill as well gives him even more influence and power.
Okonkwo was a man that was held high in his village, he was a wrestler that, in his early days had taken down one of the toughest opponents. On page one, "Okonkwo was well known throughout the nine villages and beyond." Like Kurtz, Okonkwo had flaws that affected him greatly in the end. Okonkwo lived in fear of being like his father, of being weak. One consequence that Okonkwo's fear led him to, was the killing of someone which he cared deeply for, whom he loved like his own son. On page sixty-one, "Okonkwo drew his machete and cut him down. He was afraid of being thought weak." Okonkwo's fear of being weak, was a flaw that people reading the story can relate to. Okonkwo is a highly respected man, a man with multiple wives, good crops, and children. To the reader, these parts of Okonkwo's life may not make sense. A lot of Okonkwo's life and culture might not make sense to the reader, but looking at Okonkwo's fears and flaws, gives you something to relate
The Great Gatsby is often referred to as the great American novel; a timeless commentary on the American Dream. A dream that defines success, power, love, social status, and recreation for the American public. It should be mentioned that this novel was published in 1925, which is a time when the American public had recently experienced some significant changes, including women’s suffrage, which had only taken place 6 years prior to the publication of this novel May of 1919. The women of this era had recently acquired a voice in politics, however, the social world does not always take the same pace as the political world. F. Scott Fitzgerald developed female characters that represented both women in their typical gender roles and their modern counterparts. I will be analyzing gender roles within the context of this novel, comparing and contrasting Myrtle Wilson, Jordan Baker, and Daisy Buchanan alongside one another, as well as comparing and contrasting their interactions with the men in the novel.
The Great Gatsby: Lessons from Jay. In the novel The Great Gatsby, not many people really knew the man known as Jay Gatsby. When he was rich and powerful, he was the man you "want to know." But when he died, life went on without him. It seemed as if nobody cared that he was the man behind the parties and all the good times.
Okonkwo is on two ends of a stick. Sometimes he can be shown to be a caring, sympathetic character, but others he is shown as a ruthless person that is very unsympathetic person. Okonkwo is a man of action that would rather solve things with his fists rather than talking it out. He is a great wrestler hailing from the Umuofia clan that has thrown Amalinze the Cat. Okonkwo is also a very good farmer, where he has been able to grow two barns worth of yams. He is someone that doesn’t know how to control themselves when they get angry as he will then resort to violence. During the 1920’s, the role women had under men was making a drastic change, and it is shown in The Great Gatsby by two of the main female characters: Daisy and Jordan. One was domesticated and immobile while the other was not. Both of them portray different and important characteristics of the normal woman growing up in the 1920’s. The image of the woman was changing along with morals. Females began to challenge the government and the society. Things like this upset people, especially the men. The men were upset because this showed that they were losing their long-term dominance over the female society.
Even though the use of sexism in The Great Gatsby, implied through Daisy’s remarks, is offensive, students should read this masterpiece as it portrays the darkness and hollowness of the American upper class. Fitzgerald published the book right after women won their voting rights in 1920. However, no male characters in the book acknowledge females’ individuality; as a result, this triggers public anger. Barbara Will (an English professor at Dartmouth College) believes that Fitzgerald’s stand on the issue adheres to society’s common fear over “the expanded power of the alien” (Will, p.216). A valid point is made here: males – the centre – restrict and alienate females in order to prolong their superiority.
In the novel The Great Gatsby, Fitzgerald is criticizing American society of the 1920s. He uses the characters to demonstrate the power than men had over women during these times, as well as their mindless, self-indulgent actions, where consequence was only an afterthought. The attitude towards and the role of women is shown throughout the novel. Fitzgerald also shows how many people in America during this time were delusional and had meaningless existences.
Tom Buchanan and George Wilson have plenty in common with their attitude pertaining towards women in F. Scott Fitzgerald’s novel The Great Gatsby. Fitzgerald throughout the entire novel gives the audience an insight on his thoughts about the nature of man. Fitzgerald portrays men often treating women harshly throughout his novel. For example, there are many violent acts towards women, a constant presence of dominance, and also ironically Tom and Georges over reactions to being cheated on.
Gender roles are society’s concept on how men and woman should behave. In The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald and Hamlet by William Shakespeare, gender roles are evident in how characters act and distinguish each other.
Okonkwo is “a man of action, a man of war” (7) and a member of high status in the Igbo village. He holds the prominent position of village clansman due to the fact that he had “shown incredible prowess in two intertribal wars” (5). Okonkwo’s hard work had made him a “wealthy farmer” (5) and a recognized individual amongst the nine villages of Umuofia and beyond. Okonkwo’s tragic flaw isn’t that he was afraid of work, but rather his fear of weakness and failure which stems from his father’s, Unoka, unproductive life and disgraceful death. “Perhaps down in his heart Okonkwo was not a cruel man. But his whole life was dominated by fear, the fear of failure and weakness….It was not external but lay deep within himself. It was the fear of himself, lest he should be found to resemble his father.” Okonkwo’s father was a lazy, carefree man whom had a reputation of being “poor and his wife and children had just barely enough to eat... they swore never to lend him any more money because he never paid back.” (5) Unoka had never taught Okonkwo what was right and wrong, and as a result Okonkwo had to interpret how to be a “good man”. Okonkwo’s self-interpretation leads him to conclude that a “good man” was someone who was the exact opposite of his father and therefore anything that his father did was weak and unnecessary.
From birth Okonkwo had wanted his son, Nwoye, to be a great warrior like him. His son instead rebelled and wanted to be nothing like Okonkwo. Okonkwo would not change so that his son would idolize him, as he had wanted since his son's birth. He chose not to acknowledge his son's existence instead. This would weigh heavily on anyone's conscience, yet Okonkwo does not let his relationship with his son affect him in the least bit.
When he went out into Umuofia, he found that the villagers had very similar opinions towards his father. As soon as he was old enough, Okonkwo began farming yams because “he had to support his mother and two sisters [.] And supporting his mother also meant supporting his father” (25). He received admiration from many people for this, and he turned the admiration into a feeling of security, knowing that the people of Umuofia did not think the same of him as they did his father. He began to respect himself a lot, and felt that it was appropriate to distance himself from Unoka.
Instead of a threat that can be taken away, manhood is something that is presented in an strong light with the mention of wars, and hard work toward The American Dream. Tom’s overbearing interactions with Daisy, and William’s way of interacting with Myrtle seems to define an aspect of masculinity that revolves around women as background characters. The Great Gatsby’s version of masculinity is not an initial threat like when Levene was threatened by Williamson in the office, but instead as something honorable and a positive. Instead, masculinity is commodified, packaged and sold as a product. During the sweltering summer heat, Daisy sends an invitation for Nick, Gatsby, Tom, and Jordan to accompany her to lunch. It is here that the theme of masculinity arises in the story. During the outing, Daisy Buchanan states,“ ‘You resemble the advertisement of the man’ ” which shows the theme of masculinity being a form of success and “coolness” where masculinity is seen as a burden in Glengarry Glen Rose (Fitzgerald 157). By comparing Gatsby to an “advertisement of a man”, Daisy mentions that Gatsby is nothing short of perfection, and he is everything that the ideal American Man should become. He is the idea story of an American man who worked himself from poverty
From an early age, Okonkwo was ashamed of his father, Unoka, who was unable even to feed his family. The unpredictability of receiving enough food at a young age was enough to inspire fear and embarrassment in Okonkwo who associated this embarrassment with his father and was given further justification for these feelings when he went out into Umuofia, discovering that the other villagers held similar opinions of Unoka. When he was old enough, Okonkwo began farming his own yams because “he had to support his mother and two sisters […] And supporting his mother also meant supporting his father” (25). Okonkwo’s self-reliance was admired, valued in the community where “age was respected […] but achievement was revered” (12); this admiration gave him feelings of security, and the respect of his peers pushed him towards greater self-respect, distancing him from his father.
