How does culture and society impact gender role expectations? According to Marsiglia & Kulis (2015) gender is the social and cultural patterns associated with women and men. Culture and society start impacting gender role from birth. When babies are born in a hospital, the girls are wrapped in pink blankets and the boys are wrapped in blue blankets. Also, our culture and society influence us to give female and males names that will indicate their gender. At an early age we are taught that girls are to be seen not heard. They should be sweet, polite, and submissive. Boys are taught to be tough, boisterous, and take charge. This teaching has placed men as head of the house hold and women as a silent partner. Males and females internalize messages at an early age that teach them problem solving strategies. They learn problem solving according to their parents’ beliefs, culture and society in which they are raised. How does sexism contribute to oppression? Sexism is the subordination and oppression of women based on the assumption of the superiority of men, an assumption based solely on their biological sex according to Marsiglia & Kulis (2015). Sexism has contributed to the oppression of women by making them feel subservient to men. Also, women have been denied certain jobs due sexism which has impacted oppression. For example, National Football League and National Basketball Association are male only jobs. There are plenty of women that would love to play in the NFL and NBA if they were allowed.
