Zachary Nelson Brad Flis Eng 114 19 NOV 2015 How I Met Your Mother Gender & Media Analysis The popular comedy television series of How I Met Your Mother is a show that depicts a group of friends living in New York City and somewhat centers its focus on their relationships in a comical fashion. Possesses multiple characters that make up the main cast who all represent different personalities, stereotypes and tropes but my analysis will be focused on Barney Stinson and Robin Scherbatsky. Some examples tropes that appear throughout this show include but are not limited to The Bro Code and The Lad-ette. The restrictive behavior of Barney and the progressive behavior of Robin create a terrible combination for a relationship. Barney Stinson, a man with a passion for suits and bros, is a businessman who spends his free time at the local bar “McLarens” with his friends. He is quite the loyal friend and even possesses a giant hard copy book of “The Bro Code” which he wrote himself and continues to reference many times throughout the series. This code is one he lives by and truly takes to heart. They relate because Barney isn’t really one to take a relationship seriously based on his obvious commitment issues and Robin is also not searching for any kind of serious commitment or relationship. She states several times throughout the series she isn’t looking for marriage or children at her point in life. These common relationship issues or standpoints bring them closer together because its something they can have to relate with one another. Barney’s commitment issues stem from his father issues of his childhood. This is because as a child Barney’s father left so him and his brother did not have a father figure while growing
