This article examines the effect of gender on crime in violent offenses. In the article, authors attempt to identify the cause of change in the difference between the amount of criminal offenses made by females and males, also known as gender gap. The authors used data from a variety of sources including the Uniform Crime Report (UCR), the National Crime Victimization Survey (NCVS), and the Nation Crime Survey (NCS) to research gender differences in violent offenses. “The NCS and NCVS ask respondents about whether specific behaviors have occurred, and typically the responses are used by researchers to code incidents using the official definitions of violent crimes in the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s (FBI) UCR” (Lauritsen, Heimer, and Lynch 366). Data from these sources was collected on three specific types of violent offenses: aggravated assaults, simple assaults, and robberies. The authors state that certain hypotheses were similar in correlation to the data with which they were comparing it to. However, they also identify some dissimilar results which does not cause an absolute conclusion due to the inconclusive variables that could exist in the data. Throughout the paper the authors explained their methods of formulating a calculation for comparison to the data they were reviewing. Depending upon the data being quantified, the authors noted the differences between the data in the different reports.
