Hoose and Shelley used their influence in GLF to launch preparations and gather support for the Christopher Street West Parade. This first ever pride march took place on 28 June 1970, exactly one year after the Stonewall Uprising. At least 2,000 marchers began the event, but by the end estimates of participants range from 5-10,000. This event marked the beginnings of June as Gay Pride Month and encouraged similar events around the world. On the day of that march, Jerry Hoose proclaimed that “In one year we went from darkness to sunlight.” It was an enormous moment. Thousands of LGBTQ individuals proudly came out in what was to become an annual celebration and remembrance of that historic day in Greenwich Village. After the march, Martha Shelley continued publishing for RAT and Come Out! newspapers. She organized and participated in countless events for LGBTQ and women’s rights. They wanted to provide a home for the young gay boys living on the streets of New York. STAR provided a place to sleep, meals, and some education to these struggling youths. Sylvia and Marsha wanted to provide an opportunity for these young men to avoid the struggles they had faced and do more with their lives than just hustle. Marsha remained involved in the organization until her death in 1992. She was found floating in the Hudson River and her death was ruled a suicide, but her friends all believe that something far more sinister was the cause. Sylvia took a break from the organization but returned after Marsha’s death.
