I believe that Gattaca is one of the smartest and most provocative science fiction films ever! Directed by Andrew Niccol and the film is set in the "not too distant future." Andrew Niccol's view of the future is not what most other individuals expect, but once thought about fully and carefully it seems quite believable and reasonable. This movie presents us with a new method in which society strives for “perfection” and it also makes the viewer wonder if genetic engineering is morally correct. The main character is a hero in a way, who challenges the system. Vincent (the main character) was born the old fashion way “natural”. His genetics were very bad. He supplies Jerome’s genetic samples and becomes a finalist for the space expedition. This is when the tension starts getting thick. Because first there’s the fear that Vincent might get caught cause the space center is swept daily. A single hair could blow everything for him. Secondly the director of the center, who questions the wisdoms of the upcoming expedition is murdered!
Science fiction movies was usually just alien invasions and stuff, but I believe the best movies in this genre come with ideas such as Gattaca. The science in this movie is very possible with the technology that we have today. The question is “When parents can order their perfect baby will they?” Would you take the chances and roll the genetic dice or order you a “perfect” baby? I am going to take my chance with the natural birth.
However, the real question is, to what extent is this process of conception if you will, “morally right”, and if even right at all? Morally speaking, I believe that genetic engineering in any way should only be used in extreme circumstances. Such as, if the natural method of conception isn't possible due to the parents. In that case then I believe genetic engineering should be the last resort, but only if the genetic engineering changes take place to provide a healthy child, and not to give this child any known or unknown advantages over other children that are born "the natural
