Families nowadays tend to be smaller because couples are deciding to have less kids, which for them means less responsibilities. Gallup explains that in the year 1971 there was a big decreased in childbirth, as Americans have decided to have less kids compared to the previous years where the ideal family was having four kids or more. Factors associated with this change have been the birth control pill, the increasing in cost of raising kids, and as we already discussed the increase of more women participating in the labor force. In colonial times, there was no control pills yet that’s why the women usually had many kids. Also over the decades the average cost of raising a child has become expensive and continues to do so.
