Global Positioning System
GPS, of the Global Positioning System, is a system of satellites that orbit the earth above us that send signals continuously to ground stations that monitor and control GPS operations. GPS signals can be detected by GPS receivers, which by itself can calculate the location of the receiver by around ten metres. Such the accuracy and reliability of the GPS system that its is a required item for a long trip without and contact with humans.
The GPS system was originally intended for military use; its use was to track and detect ships and submarines by the US military in the 1960s. As time moved on, and as the development progressed, its use changed, from only a military use to a more civilian use. When the GPS system finally became operational in the 1990s, it has proven itself to be a very sophisticated tool, being very reliable, as shown by the usage of the GPS system by both military and civilians.
GPS worked by each satellite that emitted a unique radio wave also known as the ‘Pseudo Random code’, which is basically a series of random radio signals; so random, that there is absolutely no chance that thre would be a matching signal. The signals, which contain the time and the position of the satellite, are then compared by the GPS receiver from four satellites. Racism presents itself in many ways in the town of Maycomb. Some are blatant and open, but others are more insidious. One obvious way that racism presents itself is in the result of Tom Robinson’s trial. Another apparent example is the bullying Jem and Scout had to endure as a result of Atticus’s appointment as Tom Robinson’s defense attorney. A less easily discernible case is the persecution of Mr. Dolphus Raymond, who chose to live his life in close relation with the colored community.

As applications of geospatial technologies continuously break the disciplinary barrier, the need for books on these technologies to reach diverse audiences is greater than ever. The challenge, however, is to write a book on this complicated subject that incorporates the knowledge of multiple disciplines and makes it valuable for those who may or may not have diverse educational backgrounds, but require using these technologies. Most books on geospatial technologies target a specific audience. Contrary to this, Geographical Information Science tries to target three different audiences (users, students, and engineers) by using formats and languages comfortable to them. While this effort is laudable, maintaining the balance and attractiveness to all the three audiences is challenging. The author, Narayan Panigrahi, has accomplished this balancing act but with mixed outcomes. His computer science background is clearly seen in the structure and contents of the chapters.
Videogames are looked down upon by parents who see them as a waste of time and experts on education who believe that games corrupt the brain. Many say violent video games are to blame for young people being so violent. Psychologists and scientists believe that videogames have a lot of benefits. One benefit being that it make kids smart and cause them to use high-level thinking skills. Video games requires many skills that aren’t taught in school but, also enhance skills that the gamer already has. Skills that are enhanced by video games include following instructions, problem solving and logic with games like angry birds and cut the rope. Hand eye coordination, fine motor skills and spatial skills used in shooting games. Research has shown enhanced skills in surgeons and fighter pilots. Planning resources management and logistics encouraged by the game SimCity.

Many people everyday get in their car, look at their navigation system and try to figure out how to get home. While they are driving, a voice will direct them in the correct direction, all they have to do is follow the directions. Once they are home they put some food in the microwave. While waiting for the food to cook, they might call someone on the their cell phone or check their e-mail. All of the technology mentioned above has either come directly from the military or researched with the help of the military. The navigation system or G.P.S.(Global Positioning Satellite) is used by the military to help them find there way just like you. It is also used to guide unmanned aircraft and missiles. The microwave oven was discovered while a scientist was doing research on radars for the military, when a candy bar melted in his pocket while he was working on the radar (Kamely 45). Cell phones, computers, and the internet where also researched by the military, to help with their communication and data transfer. The technology that was pioneered by the military has greatly improved our lives.
A beacon is a device designed to obtain information of a specific location. Important information such as the status of an airport based on the colour and rotational pattern of its airport beacon as well as weather information as indicated by weather beacon on top of a high building can be obtained by combining beacons with semaphoric indicators. Also, when used in such fashion, beacons can be considered a form of optical telegraphy.
A prioress is the head of a group of nun’s. She is described as being very neat and polite. She sang beautifully and spoke french. The type of french she spoke was not the kind of french that was spoken in Paris. Chaucer also describes her as being clean and down to earth friendly. She is rich ,which goes against the church beliefs that it is a sin to be rich. The evidence that Chaucer is interested in The Prioress because he took the time to write a fair description of her compared to some of the others that Chaucer did not like as much. GPS is a navigational aid that is satellite based. It is made up of a network of 24 satellites in orbit around the world. The first satellite was launched in 1978 and the last was put into orbit in 1994. Every 10 years another satellite is put into orbit because each satellite is made to last that amount of time. The system began as a military application but in the 1980’s the government decided to make it available to everyone, anywhere, anytime. The system finds your position by measuring the time it takes to receive the signal back to the satellite. It then does that with other satellites to triangulate your position in relation to the earth. To calculate a position in 2D the system has to be locked on to at least three satellites, but for a 3D representation you need to be locked on to at least 4 satellites. Once the position is found the GPS can calculate much more info like speed, bearing, track, distance, etc… The GPS system is very accurate; Garmin (a leader in GPS technology) states that their newest receiver is accurate up to an average of 15 meters.
