The technology that we depend on, and use in every aspect of our daily lives, has the utmost potential to destroy our lives in mere seconds with nothing but a single keystroke. As Goodman points out, in the old days, “crime was a simple affair” because criminals were limited to only a knife or a gun; then, as technology advanced with the innovation of the train system, criminals could rob up to 200 people on a train at one time (Goodman, p. 39). Fast-forward to today’s major technological innovation – the Internet –, and we see how the crime business has scaled exponentially. In my opinion, Future Crimes is geared toward the general public who has no basis of knowledge concerning cybercrimes or cybersecurity. Goodman ends the book with offering ways to combat any vicious criminal activity that has the potential to arise within our daily technological interactions; these include frequently updating your operating and virus software, using multiple different and unique passwords, being highly skeptical of suspicions downloads, and utilizing encryption software. Overall, I believe this book makes a fantastic contribution to one’s knowledge regarding cybersecurity and cybercrime, despite the multiple scare tactics that Goodman employs. The only problem with this book lies within the title; these are not just future crimes that we are facing, they are current crimes. The title implies that the plethora of risks associated with cybersecurity and cybercrime are looming in the near distance; however, it is clear to see that the threat is here and the future is
