Fundamentals of Anatomy and Physiology MED 111 Discussion 1 DISCUSSION TOPIC: Describe the body systems, listing major organs in each using anatomical planes and directional terms. In addition, discuss how the planes could be used to help a patient describe a patient concern. “An organ system is a group of anatomical structures that work together to perform a specific function or task.” (Christensen,). The organ systems of the body include: cardiovascular system, respiratory system, digestive system, muscular system, skeletal system, integumentary system, nervous system, endocrine system, reproductive system, urinary system and lymphatic system. These organ systems work together, and some organs are included in more than one system. The muscular …show more content…

Blood vessels such as arteries and veins “transport oxygen, nutrients, hormones, and cellular waste products throughout the body” Taylor (2017). The cardiovascular system and respiratory systems work together to deliver oxygen to the body. During inspiration air enters through the nose or mouth. Air travels through the pharynx, which is superior to the larynx, and then into the trachea. The lungs are inferior to the trachea. The mouth, pharynx, esophagus, stomach, small intestine, large intestine and anus are the major organs of the digestive system. Food travels from the mouth inferiorly through the pharynx, the esophagus and into the stomach. The small intestine includes the duodenum, jejunum and ileum which leads into the large intestine. The large intestine has three parts which are the cecum, colon and rectum. The colon has three regions. The ascending colon is located on the right side of the abdominal cavity and moves superiorly. The transverse colon runs across the abdominal cavity to the descending colon. The descending colon runs inferiorly down the left side of the abdominal cavity. It leads into the sigmoid colon, rectum and finally the
