Functional department are generally common in big corporations with different areas of speciality within different functions that are led by respective managers. A functional department may comprise of the finance, marketing, sales department and human resource department. For instance, the finance department functions to monitor the organization’s expenditure and revenue. Meanwhile, the marketing department is responsible to promote a service or product to potential customers in hoping to popularize the organization’s brand. Each functional manager has a management authority over a department within an organization. Listed below are some the managerial skills and behaviours expected to manage a functional department effectively. In meeting the demand of product-specific, product managers must be able to address product requirement, product life cycle management as well as to monitor the daily execution of the production team (for instance, design, progress). As for market-specific, managers of product department have the responsibility to provide training and education awareness in explaining the product features to internal stakeholders and consumers, to perform competitive analysis, product position and launch campaign such as social media marketing. The functional manager primarily construct credibility with their internal stakeholders or employees, however the manager of a product department operates in external (consumer centred) and internal facing such as the members of the department within the organization.
