Title In America there is still prejudice and discrimination. Racism against African Americans has definitely not been put to a stop. Numerous individuals think that racism no longer exists, but films and television shows currently out in the would suggest otherwise. Media has become a major part of our lives. Indeed, it has shape the way we identify other races. Media is having a huge impact on race, by presenting different stereotypes to the audience, and saying certain races behave a particular way, in which in most cases might not be true. For instance, going through life and being blamed for certain actions that another person started. In this movie the victim was Grant. However, Grant was in prison for crimes that he committed in the past and had already completed his sentence, therefore making him an easy target to pin something on, since he had a history. Like any other stereotypical movie, the Caucasian man had a problem with the African American man. Grant had a job at a butcher shop before he was put in prison. After Grant was released he wanted to start a new life. He wanted to show his wife, mother and child that his time in prison had made him a better man, and that he had improved himself. He came from a wealthy family, but life there was always a struggle. The problem started one New Years Eve at a subway complex located in California named, Fruitvale Station. At the subway complex the Caucasian man, in which he had a problem with while in prison, started a fight with Grant. Police officer’s where called into the scene, but as usual the Caucasian man gets away and they arrested Grant, the African American. While Grant was arrested, he was trying to get his friends released because they had nothing to do with the fight. During the argument there were people video recording the scene. To add, the police officers in this movie where Caucasian, and in the movie it made it seem like Grant was the unscrupulous person in the problem, but it was no't him. Due to the racist police officers, the Caucasian man was not arrested. The police officer’s made it seem as if Grant was trying to resisted the arrest, in the process of this Grant was scared to death, the officer keep telling Grant that he was going to tase him. When trying to pull out the taser he instead grabs the wrong weapon and shoots him. Grant died hours later. Grant was a great example of how African American’s get blamed for something they didn't do, because of misjudgment of others. Just because he had a bad past does not mean he stayed bad, plus the racism around him did not help get him proper justice. People need to learn how to not be so bias, and view the other side of the story not just
The film starts with an uprising after a white storeowner kills a black teenager. This incident Highlights Prejudices. The teenager was labeled a thief because of the color of his skin and the unjustifiable murder causes racial tensions that exist as a result of the integration of the high schools.
In the 1960s racial hate was a massive problem, probably the biggest issue to face the country at that time. Fast forward 50 years and ask if that problem has been solved. Obviously it hasn’t. Racial slurs are commonly used in everyday conversations and stereotypical ideas about people of different races are commonplace. Some may argue that since the time of the Civil Rights Movement in the 60s racially motivated hate issues have come so far in the direction of an equal society. It would be ignorant to say racism does not exist till today. There is almost a complete 100 year difference between the reconstruction period and the Civil Rights Movement for equal rights to the Black society. While slavery took time to vanish in the south in those hundreds of years, segregation was pushed harshly, laws we 're enacted to prevent Blacks from having certain privileges that whites had. Segregation almost seemed to kick the Blacks out of the society we live together in. The Jim Crow laws had made efficient work in separating the Blacks from the Whites in society, and it took the Civil Rights movement in 1964 to finally bring more equality to the African-American society. However, the Ku Klux Klan and still other organizations had existed and continue to exist despite efforts to bring equality. There is a strong social equality for the Black population in America today, but because of hate organizations and discrimination still existing today, black lives are being lost through murder, and even in forms of police brutality. Take for example the L.A riots in 1992 from the beating of Rodney King, or going back to 1967 the Detroit riots which tore apart these cities. Today Black Lives Matter movements exist to crush out racism in society so people no longer have to live in fear, and it is an existing movement that I think will actually fade as generations in the future work to build up society, and racism will become a thing of a past. There is however, always going to be something that causes prejudices and hate in society if not directed to one group of people. On New Year’s Day 2009, the police were called because a fight broke out on a train in Oakland, California. Oscar Grant and some of his friends were pulled off the train by former cop Johannes Mehserle. Grant struggled some with the officers while being arrested, but then he was restrained. Oscar Grant was lying on the platform when Johannes Mehserle shot him around 2 am. Granted had both hands behind his back and he was also unarmed when he was shot (Bulwa). For this assignment, I decided to watch “Crash”, a movie set in the streets of Los Angeles California and that shows the lives of various individuals with different cultural backgrounds. The movie starts with the scene of a car crash between an Asian woman and a couple of detectives near the sight of a murder, as the African American detective Graham Waters walks around the scene he stops because he saw something that shocked him, and from there a flashback begins.
