Bartleby is a strange man. The narrator refers to Bartleby as a “pale” man many times in “Bartleby the Scrivener”: “that pale young scrivener, by the name of Bartleby” (par. 83). Melville’s story was published in 1853 and he alludes to Bartleby having an essence that is not human, and that essence is of a vampire. Bartleby is not a traditional vampire, having no desire to kill humans for his insatiable need for blood. A traditional vampire has certain characteristics: pale, dead, clean, glamour#, and neat. They also drink blood, require no sleep, are in good health, and often keep to themselves. In the story, Melville depicts The Scrivener as an awkward human being, but Bartleby is not human. Through subtle cues given by Melville throughout the story, Bartleby must be a vampire.
His advice to Juliet to fake her own death is a result of her love for Romeo, and the fact that the Friar can’t stop her from marrying Paris, will lead her to the violent act of killing herself. Friar Lawrence’s character is a representation of the idea that love can lead to irrational decisions and violent actions. Most movies portray friars as wise mentors, or strict religion-followers, that lead lawful, moral, and virtuous lives. But this tragic play of Romeo and Juliet begs to differ, as the friar does nothing but help achieve the forbidden plans of two star-crossed lovers. As Friar Lawrence gets involved more deeply into the schemes of Romeo and Juliet, he too begins to warp sly plans out of his head, such as the potion plan.

Although some believe that Friar Lawrence is to blame for the death because he came up with the plan for Juliet to drink a liquid so she can be with Romeo, Juliet’s cousin, Tybalt, is all to blame and is the reason the drama has happened. Friar Lawrence told Juliet, when in the chamber, “Take thou this vial, being then in bed, and this distilling liquor drink thou off,” (IV.i.93-94). Friar Lawrence wants Juliet to take this while in bed so that it looks like she collapsed and died. Although he wanted her take this, there was no other option, other than suicide. People of Verona thought she was dead, as did Romeo. Romeo wanted to be with Juliet, so he slain himself. Although all of this is true, Tybalt is still to blame for many reasons. Tybalt got Romeo banished from Verona from fighting. Tybalt started the fight. The Prince made an announcement,”And for that offense immediately we do exile him hence,” (III.i.185-186). Since the Prince banished Romeo, he can’t see Juliet anymore. Juliet came up with the plan with Friar Lawrence because of Tybalt causing this.
I have taken a potion that Friar Lawrence gave me that will make me sleep for 42 hours. Even though I am worried that this potion will kill me, I decided to take it any ways so I can be with you. If I wake up tomorrow morning, I will have to kill myself or else my parents will make me marry Paris. My parents will think I have died so they will host a funeral for me and place me in the ancient vault with the other Capulets that have died.
