Fresh Fruit, Broken Bodies, anthropologist Seth Homes writes about how the global market, migration and racism intersect and affect farmworkers and their health. Farmworkers are caught in the web of the global market which involves not only the undocumented worker, but the consumer whom wants low prices, the farmers whom hire undocumented workers for low-wages, and farmworkers whom suffer and accept the work. He studies Triqui Indian farm workers lives and migration from Oaxaca, Mexico to agricultural production in California and Washington. Migration is a hard journey for any migrant and the choice to do so is usually because they have no other resort, but to make the journey to survive and make remittance to their families in their native country; putting individuals, families, and communities at a disadvantage. Migrating to the U.S. poses threats to a migrant’s life and health as they cannot carry much, food, water and money, due to the long journey. Dr. Holmes experiences what migrants experience when crossing the U.S. borders and was arrested and fined for entering without inspection. He stated that he was dehumanized by border patrol agents that brought him to tears, being American however, he gets to continue doing his work; the same cannot be stated for “undocumented” individuals when apprehended. Migrant farmworkers are a marginalized group and the justification for this is due to the hierarchy in the U.S. agricultural business that gives power to owners that gives them permission to segregate themselves from workers.
