The French position during World War I is a story that is rarely heard. Most of us learn about the stories of the soldiers of the Allied Forces. Allied Forces such as the United States, Great Britain, Japan, and Russia just to name a few. French armies struggled against the German forces early on and throughout the war and for the most part were mostly consumed by the German forces. France had numerous cities taken over by Germany. The French Army had many victories partly because of its diversity and recruitment of soldiers from different areas of the world, mainly Africa. The recruitment of African soldiers was a common practice throughout colonial empires. This even led to the recruitment of African American soldiers to join the French forces. These forces were the 369th Regiment from the United States and the Senegalese Tirailleurs.

The Senegalese Tirailleurs were formed in 1857. The noun tirailleur, which translates as "skirmisher", was a designation given by the French Army to indigenous infantry recruited in the various colonies and overseas possessions of the French Empire during the 19th and 20th centuries. These men were not only racially discriminated by white American soldiers but also the American Expeditionary Force headquarters which released a leaflet called the Secret Information Concerning Black American Troops, which "cautioned" French civilians of the substandard nature and “rapist tendencies” of African Americans.
