Religious individuals should be able to express themselves freely because it is illegal for any individual or organization to infringe on their rights. Not only is religious freedom a right guaranteed by the First Amendment, it is also protected under the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which states: “All persons shall be entitled to the full and equal enjoyment of the goods, services, facilities, privileges, advantages, and accommodations of any place of public accommodation, as defined in this section, without discrimination or segregation on the ground of race, color, religion, or national origin”(United States Department of Justice). This act, in addition to the right to freedom of religion, ensures the right for individuals to express their religious beliefs in whichever manner they choose. This is simply a phenomenon that cannot be tolerated in a society that claims to place such tremendous value on the freedom of religious expression. Religious expression is a right that cannot be taken away by any person or organization, and therefore should be more effectively protected by the federal government. The government has had some success in protected the rights of religious individuals, however, such as in a court case about religious expression in schools, which decided that “Schools may not discriminate against students who wear religious clothes or headcoverings.
