Laura went back North to live with her father and brother, Bert she had recently been living in the South with her aunt and uncle. One night she fond Bert talking to Joel (an old friend) in the middle of the night about whether or not Martin (a runaway slave) can stay with they until Joel could come back and take Martin to the place where a boat will pick Martin up and take him to The Promised Land, Laura said that she did not care if Martin stayed with them or not, even though deep down she knew it wasn’t right and that they shouldn’t do it. They go to Tyron’s Folly and they realizes that that is where the boat will pick up Martin. Once they leave Tryon’s Folly they hear that a runaway was captured so they go to see if it was Martin who was captured and luckily it wasn’t. But, there was a carriage that was stolen to help the captured slave escape and they realize that is was their carriage that was stolen. Later that evening when they went back home Bert is arrested because they slave catchers found it suspicious that is was Bert’s carriage that helped the slave escape is they take him. Laura tells Martin once the slave catcher leave and Martin tells Laura that they must leave today. Laura realizes that is it now her responsibility to take Martin to Tyron’s Folly, so they get everything ready and wait for the right moment to leave. Laura and Bert make to Tryon’s folly and Joel arrives right after them and Laura and Martin were relieved it wasn’t a slave catcher. In 1776, David McCullough gives a vivid portrayal of the Continental Army from October 1775 through January 1777, with sharp focus on the leadership of America’s greatest hero, George Washington. McCullough’s thesis is that had not the right man (George Washington) been leading the Continental Army in 1776, the American Revolution would have resulted in a vastly different outcome. He supports his argument with a critical analysis of Washington’s leadership during the period from the Siege of Boston, through the disastrous defense of New York City, the desperate yet, well ordered retreat through New Jersey against overwhelming odds, and concludes with the inspiring victories of Trenton and Princeton. By keeping his army intact and persevering through 1776, Washington demonstrated to the British Army that the Continental Army was not simply a gang of rabble, but a viable fighting force. Additionally, Mr. McCullough supports his premise that the key to the survival of the American Revolution was not in the defense of Boston, New York City, or any other vital terrain, but rather the survival of the Continental Army itself. A masterful piece of history, 1776 is not a dry retelling of the Revolutionary War, but a compelling character study of George Washington, as well as his key lieutenants, and his British adversaries, the most powerful Army in the 18th Century world. When I read this book, I went from a casual understanding of the hero George Washington to a more specific understanding of why Washington was quite literally the exact right man at the exact right place and time to enable the birth of the United States.
There are many ways in which we can view the history of the American West. One view is the popular story of Cowboys and Indians. It is a grand story filled with adventure, excitement and gold. Another perspective is one of the Native Plains Indians and the rich histories that spanned thousands of years before white discovery and settlement. Elliot West’s book, Contested Plains: Indians, Goldseekers and the Rush to Colorado, offers a view into both of these worlds. West shows how the histories of both nations intertwine, relate and clash all while dealing with complex geological and environmental challenges. West argues that an understanding of the settling of the Great Plains must come from a deeper understanding, a more thorough knowledge of what came before the white settlers; “I came to believe that the dramatic, amusing, appalling, wondrous, despicable and heroic years of the mid-nineteenth century have to be seen to some degree in the context of the 120 centuries before them” .
Bravery can be showed by having strength, being willing to sacrifice, and standing up for yourself and others. Life will not be very fun if you do not try to make it fun. She was a teacher at a few schools, and when she was smaller in Walnut Grove for the second time, she ran errands for her mother and other town folk. When Laura first settled in De Smet, two brothers and their sister came to Laura’s house during the hard and cold winter, the Wilders. They agreed to help the Ingalls until summer and then went off to start their own settlements. After Laura started teaching, one of the brothers, Almonzo, started bringing her home from her job on the weekends, which was a long way. Almonzo had a team of fast driving horses and a buggy. The book follows Dana who is thrown back in time to live in a plantation during the height of slavery. The story in part explores slavery through the eye of an observer. Dana and even Kevin may have been living in the past, but they were not active members. Initially, they were just strangers who seemed to have just landed in to an ongoing play. As Dana puts it, they "were observers watching a show. We were watching history happen around us. And we were actors." (Page 98). The author creates a scenario where a woman from modern times finds herself thrust into slavery by account of her being in a period where blacks could never be anything else but slaves. The author draws a picture of two parallel times. From this parallel setting based on what Dana goes through as a slave and her experiences in the present times, readers can be able to make comparison between the two times. The reader can be able to trace how far perceptions towards women, blacks and family relations have come. The book therefore shows that even as time goes by, mankind still faces the same challenges, but takes on a reflection based on the prevailing period.

In the middle of the night, four white men storm into a cabin in the woods while four others wait outside. The cabin belongs to Alice and her mom. The four men pull out Alice’s father along with her mom, both are naked. Alice manages to scramble away. The men question Alice’s father about a pass, which allows him to visit his wife. Her father tries to explain the men about the loss of the pass but the men do not pay any attention to him. Instead they tie him to a tree and one of the white man starts to whip him for visiting his wife without the permission of Tom Weylin, the “owner” of Alice’s father. Tom Weylin forbid him to see his wife, he ordered him to choose a new wife at the plantation, so he could own their children. Since Alice’s mother is a free woman, her babies would be free as well and would be save from slavery. But her freedom “status” does not stop one of the patroller to punch her in the face and cause her to collapse to the ground.

In the story “The Passage” by Justin Cronin, published June 8, 2010, a lot of amazing things happened. In this dystopian literature of vampiric takeover, there seems to be nothing that can stop it. Or is there? Justin’s main characters set out on a journey of epic proportions. As they try to save the world, it might just crumble around them. Can these blood-suckers be beaten? Can humans prove stronger and smarter than supposed “super humans”? I suppose you will just have to find out by reading this amazing story of strength, fear, and love.
This book has taught me a lot about Alexander Hamilton. Most of it was a surprise to me. This book includes where he was born, how he moved to the United States, what he had done to contribute to the country, and his wife and kids. This book has plenty of insight on one of our greatest leaders.
In his history of the Underground Railroad, Gateway to Freedom, Eric Foner discusses the many facets of the Underground Railroad in the 19th century and the plight of fugitive slaves as they made their way from southern states into upstate New York and Canada. By writing this history using the stories of fugitive slaves instead of only accounts of white abolitionists, Foner debunks romanticized misconceptions of the Underground Railroad as a cohesive and highly organized pathway 18th century slaves used to escape, extending all the way into the lower South. He argues instead that the “Underground Railroad” was merely a term used to describe the local groups, committees and abolitionists that worked together using various means to help fugitives on their journey to freedom.

The title of this book relates to the story, because in the book, Ponyboy and Johnny are “outsiders.” They can be thought of as Outsiders because they are labeled Greasers although they do not act like hoodlums, like the rest of the Greasers. They are thought of as Greasers just because they live on the East Side of town, and because they slick back their hair. But Ponyboy and Johnny are different then all of the other Greasers because they show their emotions, and are sensitive.
What do you think of; when you hear the word slave? According to Merriam-Webster a slave is someone who “is completely subservient to a dominating influence”. Two of the most known African Americans, who were born slaves and helped others of their race become free, were Frederick Douglass and Harriet Tubman. Using different tactics they helped many people become free from slavery. This paper will demonstrate Fredrick Douglass’s narrative ‘An American Slave’, which will expose his crucial role in the abolition of slavery, how Douglass overcame slavery, and took control of his own life. Douglass’s tactics for helping slaves will then be compared to Harriet Tubman, one of the most famous Underground Railroad conductors.
