For a long time ago, we have heard many things about slaves and slavery system. Most slaves always were beaten up and abused by chattel slavery system. According to autobiography of Frederick Douglass, Life and Time of Frederick Douglass, is stories about his life and his trying to be a freeman. Most American always know Frederick Douglass, an Africa- America slave who escaped from slavery to struggle to end slavery system that nobody can be brave to perform. Abolitionist is a person who favors the abolition of a practice or institution, especially capital punishment or (formerly) slavery. One by one, Douglass showed his readers the process of chasing his dreams and how he was introduced to abolitionist or slave systems. Firstly, after moving to New Bedford, he found a job, made money, and it was belong to him. He read the Liberator which edited by William Lloyd Garrison and published by Isaac Knapp. He got a passionate about the Liberator. He started to join all the antislavery meeting. I supposed that he wanted to see more people, and got more knowledge about antislavery work, and also attending at those meeting help to warm up his heart, and his belief. In 1841, Douglass got chance to attend in this convention that was organized by Mr. Garrison and his friends. Surprising, he was invited to speech some words by Mr. William C. Coffin, a prominent abolitionist in early day. He was nervous and worried when he told his slaver story. However, the listeners were interested, understood and sympathized with him. He got successful to introduce to the world of abolitionist. He got an entrance to his new life with a strong hope that freedom might soon be given to many people who under bondage of slavery. After that, he gave more time to focus on his education, and Douglass writing skill brought him to some abolitionist leaders. That was a big step for his life. Frederick Augustus Washington Bailey (or better known as Frederick Douglass) was born in 1818 to a black mother and a white father. Despite this unfavorable beginning, he was – and still is, to this day – universally recognized as a symbol for freedom. He dedicated his entire life towards earning rights like freedom and the right to vote for African American people.
During Frederick Douglass lifetime he had a big impact on the society, which still can be understood today by looking at how the society developed during his lifetime, and even after his death. The main significance that Douglass did was through his great oral skills, which he used both as a politician, and as a lecturer. Already when Douglass was thirty-three years old he was a part of the Massachusetts Anti-Slavery Society (MASS). Up till 1847, which was, the year when he turned twenty-nine he was one of the most well known persons in the organization. (Fanuzzi, pg. 55) The Massachusetts Anti-Slavery Society was an organization that was started by William Lloyd Garrison, as can be understood through the name the organization was against slavery.

The Autobiography of Frederick Douglass gives a first person perspective on the life of a slave in the rural south and the city. Frederick Douglass was able to read and think about the evils of slavery and the reasons for its abolishment. Throughout his autobiography Frederick Douglass talks of the many ways a slave and master would be corrupted by the labor system. The master justified his actions through a self-serving religion and a conscience belief that slaves were meant to be in their place. Frederick Douglass noticed that in order to maintain the slaves belief in this system the master had to resort to trickery of a slaves body and mind.

Slave owners in the South were some of the most cruel and inhumane human beings out there. They used many tactics to maintain a prosperous system of slavery amongst them. Like many, Frederick Douglass was born a slave. Deprived of as much as possible, Douglass knew not much more than his place of birth. Masters were encouraged to dispossess slaves of any knowledge and several of them did not know their birthdays or other personal details of themselves. The purpose of this was to keep slaves as misinformed of anything other than labor as possible. Slave owners knew the dangers that would upraise if slaves became literate and brave enough to fight for freedom.

The author, Frederick Douglass, taught himself how to read and write, and was able to share his story to show the evils of slavery, not only in regard to the slaves, but with regard to masters, as well. Throughout Douglass’ autobiography, he shares his disgust with how slavery would corrupt people and change their whole entire persona. He uses ethos, logos, and pathos to help establish his credibility, and enlighten his readers about what changes needed to be made.

It is an autobiography that details Douglass’s experiences while he was enslaved. However, it is evident that he has been forced to censor the content of his narrative. Douglass mentions more than once that he is not able to say everything he desires. Moreover, on the surface the book is about the harshness of his life as a slave, but on a deeper level Douglass uses irony to give a compelling criticism of the institution of slavery. Douglass writes this piece of literature with strong wording to get his point across. He is not trying to point out the unpleasant parts of history, but to make people face the truth. He wants readers to realize that slavery is brutalizing and dehumanizing, that a slave is able to become a man, and that some slaves, like himself, have intellectual ability. These points are commonly presented through the words of Douglass because of his diction.
