The American Dream, the dream that defines what America is back then and today. What is the American dream? This American dream is a promise that gave people all over the world the courage to leave their countries. These people traveled the distance to obtain the promise that they heard about. This promise was freedom, and opportunity which played a big role in these people’s lives. These are people coming from third world countries who don’t have the freedom of religion or maybe something else, others also didn’t have the opportunity to obtain their dreams. The American Dream would not be complete without freedom. There are all kinds of freedom America still offers today. A freedom that no one seems to realize is the freedom of failure. Here in America if you fail, and continue to work hard you will eventually succeed. The freedom to fail can link back to opportunity. In the story,” The Right to Fail” by William Zinsser, he talks about the opportunity in failing. William Zinsser uses a film directory named Fred Zinnemann as an example. Zinsser states,” I have learned a great deal from my failures” this was a line said by the director Fred Zinnemann. This man Fred Zinnemann is a great example, he is a director from Hollywood who created one of the most honored movies. Zinnemann explained that it is alright to fail, we have the freedom to fail. With this freedom we acquire the opportunity to learn from our mistakes. From our learned mistakes we can use the wisdom to achieve success and this would not be possible without freedom and opportunity from the American Dream. Freedom of religion, in America we are not forced to worship a specific religion, we are not punished either for worshipping one. Even to this day we are free to speak against our government if we do not like the way it runs.The people can speak freely of their opinion. People of america can even peacefully assemble against a certain idea. All of this freedom without any punishment. To this day this great piece of the American Dream is still alive due to, “The Bill of Rights: A Transcription” (Pg. 46). Stated in the first Amendment, “ Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof: or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press, or the right of the people people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government…” (Pg. 46). Though this is much easier said than done, with a strong work ethic, Americans all have an equal opportunity to succeed —otherwise known as The American Dream. The American dream is the ideal that every U.S. citizen should be able to achieve success and prosperity through equal opportunities such as hard work, patience, determination, initiative. In William Zinsser’s essay “The Right to Fail,” the readers are presented with the idea that failure is a part of the pathway to life to be able to achieve the American dream. Like most people, this complicates what we see as the American dream. Do we all face failure at some point in life? Will we be able to pick ourselves back up after this point? In the United States' Declaration of Independence the founding fathers stated: ".held certain truths to be self-evident, that all Men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness." Through the course of change in the world- either through prosperity, capitalism or greed- people have lost focus on the real meaning of 'the American dream'. It is no longer the gamely aspiration of living life to the fullest, providing a better life for yourself and others; instead, a pursuit of those materialistic aspects of life. Freedom is something that is not taken lightly in our country. With so many people in America, and so many different religions and views, there will never be a way to make every single person happy. People have the right to believe what they choose, say what they want to say, and do what they want to do. They have the right to worship and take part in ceremonies they choose. It is not for the government to tell them how to live their life. There may be restrictions on certain things but they do not require you to believe a specific way. America is a privileged nation and a free country and the people have every right to be thankful for all the freedoms we have been given.

In America alone needs is a dream and the motivation to carry out that dream. Ambition is the driving force behind the American Dream. It allows any one that has an aspiration, a desire, a yearning, to carry out the individual dream. It knows no bounds of race, creed, gender or religion. It stands for something great, something that every one can strive towards. A dream can be a desire for something great. In America, the American Dream allows dreams to become realities. According to Webster's New World Dictionary, the American Dream is defined as "An American social ideal that' stresses egalitarianism and especially material prosperity". To live this dream is to succeed. It allows anyone, rich or poor to have the opportunity to succeed. It is the ability to come from nothing and become so me thing. To succeed at any thing you do, you must have patience and persistence. It requires hard work, persistence and a desire for something better. What would you do without freedom? Too many people in America take the greatest thing we have in our country for granted. Not a lot of people realize how great they have it compared to other countries in the world. I couldn’t imagine from the time I was born having someone already have my life picked out for me, or work at the same job for 40 years knowing you can never move up from the position you started at, and the worst thing is you never even chose that job.
