Subject The main idea of this essay is how literature is not being taught in a format that will allow students to fully understand how to correctly read and comprehend literature. The subtopics are the books used repeatedly, the methods used to teach the literature, education system/curriculum and teacher motivation,
Occasion The occasion that caused the creation of this essay is the rise of apathy among high school students towards reading that may have increased due to the rise of technological advancements throughout that time period such as free email and faster internet.

The mother, who was still incapable of breathing properly, began to cough numbly with her hand up over her mouth. (84-85) The purpose of this passage is to signal the turning point of the family’s hope for Gregor to return. His whole family has no faith that the cockroach living in their dwelling is even their beloved family member. Kafka’s diction when Grete referred to Gregor as an “it” displays her loss of hope. She no longer can make herself believe that Gregor is her Gregor. She makes a small speech about how he is a nuisance and should be rid of. Grete’s words persuade her father to dispose of him as soon as they can. He is convince that Gregor is just a negative object in their lives. Meanwhile the mother is having a terribly hard time dealing with this. She tries to cling on to the hope that Gregor would return but having her son in this type of condition has caused her to have breathing problems and become ill. Her negative condition only proves Grete’s point of Gregor has become a pest to them. The family has no way of knowing if Gregor is still himself mentally, since he has lost his ability to talk. The personification of when her parents glances communicated that she should be married off, aids in explaining the transformation that Grete went through of her going from a young girl to an adult. Her parents are planning to find her husband, which signifies that Grete has become an adult, both physically and mentally. When she started to care for Gregor, she was just a young girl without any duties or responsibilities, but when she took on the job as his caretaker she started to mature mentally because for the first time in her life she had responsibility. Furthermore at the end of the passage when Grete had “lifted herself up and stretched her young body” hints at imagery of a butterfly freeing itself from its cocoon after its transformation, which also signals her change from girl to woman. Therefore Grete’s metamorphosis differed vastly from Gregor’s as her change will positively affect her life while Gregor’s did
