The most important part of your life, some say. The best years of your life said others. The part of your life that determines who you will be when you get older they all say. High school, the four years before college or getting a job and going into the real world. Over the years high school has changed drastically. I talked to my dad about his experience in high school and how different it was from mine. My dad graduated high school in the year 1987 from Tahanto Regional High School in Boylston Massachusetts. High school years ago was not like the movies. For one you did have rules and they did have to be followed. When my dad was in high school, he only ever got a detention for being tardy three times in a semester. Some of his friends got detention for talking back to teachers or even smoking in the bathrooms. When you got detention you did homework or cleaned the chalkboards and erasers. When you were a senior at my dad’s high school you were also allowed to go to lunch off campus. The seniors also had senior skip day when his whole senior class skipped school. You have to go into a new atmosphere with many new people and rules. It can be hard to figure out where you fit in and belong. This has stayed mostly the same for past and present. High school has always been a new atmosphere and experience. When my dad was in high school he loved to play sports with his friends, go to school dances, and hang out with friends. There were no football teams at my dad’s high school because it wasn’t a big enough high school, so in the fall you watched soccer, field hockey, and track. My dad ran cross country in the Fall, played basketball in the Winter, and played baseball in the Spring. His school was surrounded by athletics fields much like any other high school past and present. School dances had music, dancing, and each one had a different theme. They were locally decorated by the students based on the theme of that particular dance. At lunch, he sat with all his friends. The lunches were typical and always had the same meals. There were no snacks that you could buy, just what was being served for
