There are four types of data in scholarly research. The data types are (a) nominal, (b) ordinal, (c) interval, and (d) ratio (Zhang, 1996). Nominal data refers to data differentiated by a categorical naming system. Ordinal data is numerical data used to rank order a set of entities or data points by position on a scale. Ordinal data is for sequencing only, it cannot be used to perform math. Interval data is divided into ranges and the distance between the intervals is consistent. The last data type is ratio. Ratio data is interval data with a true zero
Examples of the four data types discussed above will follow. The examples should provide a better understanding of the data types. Examples of nominal data are numbers on sports jerseys and automobile classes (e.g., sports, sedan, luxury, compact, etc.). Examples of ordinal data are student class rankings (e.g., first, second, tenth, etc.) and student grades (e.g., A, B, D, etc.). An example of interval data are temperature marking on a thermometer. . Examples of ratio data is weight and speed.
