There are four ideas for the explanation of poverty. One of the first explanations is to blame the individual. Due to the decisions an individual has made, they have driven themselves into impoverishment. In addition to this, the idea argues individuals who are poor are that way because of their poor personal characteristics. People are responsible for themselves being poor because there are plenty of resources out there for the individual to survive. This includes minimum wage, access to public education and public resources, and assisting programs for the impoverished such as welfare. This explanation deals with the ranking of people within a hierarchy based off their gender, race, income, social status, etc. This sort of intertwines with everything in the way that it discusses financial gaps between people based off not only their capabilities as human beings to provide for themselves, but also their disadvantages in regions where gender or race are looked at as unequal and even people’s social associations with one another. Discrimination is a major factor in this idea. Social stratification also implements the idea of culture in relation to poverty. This is perhaps one of the most prominent causes of poverty in my eyes. Individual absorb the culture around them at a young age. This will affect how they behave in society. If a child is born into the projects living off a one parent minimum wage income, and they are surrounded by the temptations of drugs, the hardships of gang violence, and unlawful other individuals, they world view will be different from those of others; moreover, this isn’t a rare or unrealistic scenario. Underdeveloped citys/towns are fairly common nationwide. Locally, Lawrence is a perfect example of this with a poverty level 29.2 percent below the poverty threshold. With no money circulating throughout the city, no substantial businesses to bring money into the city, and abandoned business lots everywhere, it is almost as if this city is stuck. Poverty is a potential outcome for everyone. It’s sneaky and many people fall victim to it every year. No one believes that they have the potential to fall into debt, but it can happen through a string of bad luck, time running short, and other possibilities that can’t be controlled. People who are struggling with difficulty believe that there is no way out because no one will help them. However, there are ways for us, as a society, to help those who are short on income receive the help that they need. Many of the impoverished are thought to be slackers, addicts, or self-destructive to their lives. Society can help each other by dismembering the stereotypes given to people who are underneath the “Poverty Line” that they used as wedges between the classes. Labels given to those who’re poor have nothing to do with who they are as humans.
The American dream is impossible for the more impoverished because over the years poverty rates have been increasing. The richest country in the world still has more than 12% of its total population, and almost 20% of all children under the age of 18, unable to meet, let alone be guaranteed coverage of basic needs. With that said the nation has fallen apart in the last 25 years. America has faced economic insecurity and it is up to us to change it. One of the main causes of poverty is a lack of money. There are some families that do have at least one person employed in the household but the money earned is not enough to provide for the family. Tough decisions such as paying rent buying groceries become a daily challenge for struggling households. Those living in households headed by people with no high school degree are the most likely to enter poverty. Limited options in the job market make it hard for those without degrees the ability to find jobs that will pay above minimum wage. Everyone knows what the word poverty means. It means poor, unable to buy the necessities to survive in today's world. We do not realize how easy it is for a person to fall into poverty: A lost job, a sudden illness, a death in the family or the endless cycle of being born into poverty and not knowing how to overcome it. There are so many children in poverty and a family's structure can effect the outcome. Most of the people who are at the poverty level need some type of help to overcome the obstacles. There are many factors of poverty but before getting into that I would like to state that being rich is not just about having money. You can be rich in health, you can be rich in character, and you can even be rich in the love you receive or provide. Many, take for granted of the small things that can’t be purchased. When all of the materialistic things are gone, all you’ll have left is the person you have become and the soul you keep. Poverty has been around for quite some time, back when agriculture was as rich as technology is now. Let’s face it technology has consumed America. I say America because if you go to a third world country many don't have the luxury of ever coming close to owning an iPhone, you’ll mention iPhone and they’ll stare at you in awe. IPhone is a great example of how profound poverty in America continues to be. The sales for the iPhone 4 devices sold were 1.5 Million! There were people purchasing this new device when they knew they could not afford it. What drove them to buying? The needs to have the newest technology, there’s a difference from the wants you buy and the things you need. 9 out of 10 of the things you want are to feed your satisfaction, who am I to judge who buys what, but when you can’t pay rent or buy diapers for your child and use your welfare money or child support money then who is morally wrong? How can there be so much misery and insecurity in the midst of such abundance? One of the first things we see is that poverty doesn’t exist all by itself. It is simply one end of an overall distribution of income and wealth in society as a whole. Poverty is both a structural aspect of the system and consequence of how the system is organized and how people participate in it.
Those living in poverty have a lack of funds to invest in education, thus their schools lack the material and staff to probably train their students for future success. This lack of education is the root cause of poverty, because those with no education can’t compete for higher paying jobs that require basic understanding in subjects like math, such as being an accountant or bank manager. Their lack of education has limited their job opportunities, therefore limiting them from improving their lifestyle. Furthermore, poverty travels from generation to generation like an endless cycle. In addition, Dropout rates of 16 to 24-years-old students who come from low income families are seven times higher than those from families with higher incomes. Also Less than 30% of students in the bottom quarter of incomes enroll in a 4-year school. Among those less than 50% graduate from college(Dosomething). The lack of education and training for well-paying jobs inhabits these people from ever escaping the cycle of poverty. This nation has a problem: more of its citizens rely on the federal government for help than to support themselves with a full time job. Poverty has many negative effects on the people who suffer from it and on the economy. Everyone needs to be made aware of poverty and the many negative effects it has on people. There are things that could be done to help reduce the amount of people that are in poverty. Reducing poverty would decrease health risks, strengthen the middle class, and help the democracy.
Being able to speak about poverty we first need to understand its origin and cause. Each cause of poverty varies however they all effect people and society the same way. There are two ways to categorize poverty from a sociologist viewpoint. Absolute poverty simply refers to the condition in which one is unable to afford the necessities of life, whereas relative poverty refers to the condition in which one is unable to afford that which is considered a normal standard of living in society. Absolute poverty is far more worse than relative poverty because they could quite possible not have a house or food to live on for everyday survival. There are basically five different categories in which each poverty stricken person can be placed in. The first category are those who are not able to work because they are too old, too young, disabled, or tied down by social responsibility. The second category are those who are able and qualified to work but can not find work. The third category are those who are not equipped to fill available jobs either because they are undereducated or because their skills have become outdated. The fourth category are those whose social and personal problems have brought them to a point of self-defeating discouragement. The last category are those who are underpaid, or unable to get a fair price for what they have to sell. After defining which people are in poverty, these categories can answer my question of why are they in poverty and how they can be helped.
In conclusion, sometimes actions take place that changes a person’s outlook on life and as you can see poverty is one that can have a huge effect on not only one person, but also the people around him/ her.
