Formalism supports stop and frisks in a way or two but mostly doesn’t support them. Officers do have the duty to keep the streets safe and protect the public. Crime went down during stop and frisks. In 1993, 26.5 homicides per 100,00 population or about 7.9% of all US homicides. In 2014 the rate dropped to 4 per 100,000 that was only 2.4% of US homicides. It is also important to know in 2013 a judge ruled against stop and frisk stating that it is discriminatory. Since that ruling shootings went up 23% (All data from NYPD Debate PDF). Even though it has reduced crime, formalism doesn’t care about the outcomes.
