In 1614, a dutch private trader named Adriaen Block would observe the area from his ship when traveling on the Flushing Bay heading towards the Long Island Sound. He notched how similar it looked to his hometown called “Vlissingen”, so he named the land “Vlissingen”. “Vlissingen” in dutch meant Salt Meadow (Jason D. Antos, 2010). The Dutch had control of the area and soon on October 10, 1645, the town was officially called Flushing (Jason D. Antos, 2010). By 1683, the English took over the Dutch and controlled the area.English renamed New Amsterdam as New York but kept Flushing as it is (Jason D. Antos, 2010). The seventeenth century was a time of great change in colonial America. Virginia, the first colony in the Chesapeake region, was established in 1624. Plymouth, the first colony in New England, was established in 1620. These two regions developed in distinct ways, but were intertwined because of their ties to England. The Chesapeake colonies were established for economic reasons, as the Virginia Company of London looked to mass-produce cash crops in the new world. The New England colonies, however, were created to be a religious haven for those who opposed the English church. Both regions developed economic and political systems that catered to the desires of the respective populations and the geographical conditions.
The seventeenth century marked the start of great colonization and immigration to the New World that was North America. Mainly in on the eastern coast of what is now the United States, England established colonies on this new land to thrive socially and economically. The English government readily sent its citizens to America to exploit its abundant source of raw materials and the English people exponentially came to the colonies to start a new life for themselves and to thrive socially. In Virginia during the seventeenth century, the geographical attributes in this region allowed the establishment of the cash crop tobacco to rapidly transform the colony socially and economically. Particularly in the Chesapeake Bay, the goal of social and economical development was achieved.
The Roanoke colony was established before Jamestown in August of 1587. It was located off the coast of what is today North Carolina. There were two trips taken to the colony before they finally took a group of citizens off. The first one was for the explorers and the second one was for the people who took maps and founded the area. The man in charge of the colony was Sir Walter Raleigh. This was the man who appointed John White as governor of the colony. John White's daughter was pregnant with a baby girl and gave birth on the island August 18, 1587 to the first english baby on American soil. They named her Virginia Dare. Ten days later, John White had left to go get more supplies for the colony from England. There he had gotten caught up in the war that was going on between the Spanish and English naval forces. During the late 16th century and into the 17th century two colonies emerged from England. The two colonies were called the Chesapeake and New England colonies. Even though the two areas were govern by the English, the colonies had similarities as well as differences. The Chesapeake and New England colonies grew into obviously distinct establishments. Difference in colonial motivation, religious, political structures, socio-economic, and race relation, were responsible for molding the territories.
In 1419, Prince Henry the Navigator of Portugal began the period of time known as the “Age of Exploration”. Europe’s leading superpowers, France, Spain, Portugal, Holland, and England, all competed for colonization in unknown territories. Samuel de Champlain colonized along the St. Lawrence River in 1608, Henry Hudson of Holland established Albany in 1609, and Spain established colonies in Mexico and Mesoamerica. In 1607, England established its first colony in North America around the Chesapeake Bay, and nearly a decade later established a second colony in present-day New England. Both New England and the Chesapeake were founded by the British around the same time; however, both colonies developed a different economy, government, and many other ways of life.
How many shows on television do you know that offer a guilt-free antihero as its protagonist? Well, I certainly cannot think of many, and I believe that is the inaugural case as to why NBC’s The Blacklist has been this Fall’s number one show. The idea behind it is that an ingenious, criminal mastermind for some apparent reason starts to assist the FBI catch the world’s most wanted criminals, some of which they did not know existed. Although I am already a fan of the show, I do think that The Blacklist does borrow much of its premise from USA’s White Collar. I feel Andy Greenwald describes the show best when he says, “It’s a cop procedural with a criminal as the lead investigator.”
Picture Manhattan in 1860, a time before the city had been dolled up and gotten ready for the silver screen, before the glamour and allure took over. Amsterdam Vallan (DiCaprio) is a young Irish man that migrates to the USA at a young age. Amsterdam’s story takes place in Five Points District of New York, a filthy and dangerous part of the city before it was deleted form history. As a young boy Vallan witnessed his father’s murder at the hand of William Cutting or Bill the Butcher (Day-Lewis) during one of their many gang wars. As Amsterdam’s story progresses along side The Butcher they become inseparable, but Amsterdam had ulterior motive. Ultimately, Amsterdam attempts to betray his new found ally in order to avenge his father’s death. Historical accounts of events are almost always synthesized by the storyteller; in the case Gangs of New York Martin Scorsese tells of Five Points, The Dead Rabbits Riots, and The Draft Riots, but is his fictional story accurate through history?
In the time period leading up to 1700, American history was a time of tremendous settlement and establishment of colonies across the nation. In determining how the colonies were to be created, the settlers had to question how long they were going to live at these locations; as well as, which places were flowing with the resources and materials they were searching for. In this case, English settlers founded the New England and Chesapeake regions in the early 17th century; however, the two regions became different from each other as time passed, for each became distinct colonies by 1700. During the late 16th and into the 17th century, European countries expeditiously colonized the recently discovered Americas. In particular, England sent out many groups to the east coast of North America to two main regions. From the beginning, both the Chesapeake and New England region had distinct identities. The differences between the two colonies were spurred from a single, crucial factor: the initial reason the colonists came to the New World. The varied motives played a key role in how the societies developed, affecting each colony in every way: economically, socially and politically.
“What We are to Advertisers” by James B. Twitchell is a short article that emphasize how advertisement attracts audience magically. From the quote, “ Mass production means mass marketing, and mass marketing means the creation of mass stereotypes” James points out of how the world appear to be. The advertisers seems to be psychologically abuse to the public for them to be successful in their industry. Base on the way the society act, dress and thinks, we fantasize something ridiculous and only our imagination can only make it close to a reality. With that in mind, the industry of advertisements will immediately think of a way to try and sell their product to us.
Dutch Schultz was born Arthur Flegenheimer, Despite of the nickname "Dutch" Arthur Flegenheimer was a German Jew. Flegenheimer was arrested early, at the age of 17, for burglary. He served time at Blackwell's Island for one year and was released. After returning to his hometown, he demanded to be called "Dutch Shultz" the nickname of a famous gangster from the late 1800's.
The English had two main colonies in the new world, Jamestown and Plymouth. The first colony was Jamestown, established in Virginia in 1607. Jamestown was settled by Captain John Smith, and was named after King James I. Tobacco was the main export of Jamestown, and became the basis of the Jamestown economy, sending more than 50,000 lbs of the plan back to Europe by 1618 (textbook 46). Jamestown had a very rocky start, many colonists dying in the first few years of the settlement, and the settlers had many problems with natives. Shortly after the arrival of English colonists the Natives attacked them, and were finally forced back by a canon from the English. A very uneasy truce was finally settled between the natives, called the Powhatans, and the English (textbook 44-5). Economic growth and expanding their territories were the main priorities of the English in the Jamestown colonies.
