Argument Synthesis Even though making the decision to vaccinate their children is frightening for parents, it is important that they become more educated so they can feel confident about vaccinations.
Parents need to know the benefits of vaccinations before deciding on if vaccinations are for them. According to the CDC, “vaccines reduce the risk of flu-associated acute respiratory infection by about one half in pregnant women... studies also show that pregnant women can reduce the risk of flu illness in their babies by up to half.” It is important for pregnant women to get the flu vaccine to protect themselves and their children. Vaccines are more effective when the majority of the people in an area are getting vaccinated. According to the CDC, “at least two factors play an important role in determining the likelihood that flu vaccine will protect a person from the flu: 1) characteristics of the person who is being vaccinated and 2) the similarity or “match” between the flu viruses the flu vaccine is designed to protect against.” The flu vaccine is also more effective when more people are vaccinated. Vaccines, like everything, have the potential to be dangerous. According to ProCon, “vaccines can cause serious and fatal side effects (Use Pro Con).” ProCon also said, “According to the CDC, one out of a million children are at risk of life-threatening allergic reactions. The rotavirus vaccination can cause intussusception, which requires hospitalization, in one out of 20,000 babies (Use Pro con).” Those side effects do happen, but they are uncommon. Other side effects that can occur from the “DTaP and MMR vaccines are, long-term seizures, coma, lowered consciousness, and permanent brain damage (Use Pro Con).” These vaccines can severely harm children when they are administered. Vaccines may also be linked to “learning disabilities, asthma, autism, diabetes, chronic inflammation, and others (Use Pro Con).” Vaccines can also be dangerous because of their ingredients. According to ProCon, “some physicians believe that thimerosal, an organic mercury compound found in trace amounts in one flu vaccine for children and other vaccines for adults, is linked to autism (Use Pro Con).” Parents worry that by giving their kids vaccines they could develop autism. ProCon also states, “aluminum is used in some vaccines and excess aluminum in human bodies can cause neurological harm (Use Pro Con).” The chemicals inside of some vaccines can cause serious harm to adults and children, and parents want to avoid that.
