Perhaps, the discovery of the dome for Florence’s cathedral, could be said to have been motivated by prize money. The town’s owners promised to pay the person who could come up with solutions, on how a dome could be constructed on the already existing octagonal walls. This begun the process which led to the discovery of the dome by Filippo Brunelleschi.
As part of the discovery process, questions such as “How would a dome which sized about 150 feet across, and starting 180 feet above the ground be built on top of the existing walls”? Could such a dome stay up without the known architectural styles of those times? Was there enough materials available for the working on such a huge dome? Could a dome be built on the existing octagonal walls, …show more content…

To counteract “hoop stress,” the outward, bulging pressure created by a large structure’s weight that could cause it to crack or collapse, he would bind the walls with tension rings of stone, iron, and wood, like hoops on a barrel. He’d build the first 46 feet in stone, he said, after which he would continue with lighter materials, either spugna or brick. He also assured the overseers that he could do without conventional, ground-based scaffolding. They welcomed the enormous savings in lumber and labor that would result, at least during work on the first 57 feet, after which everything would depend on how things went, “because in building, only practical experience will teach that which is to be followed.” (Tom Mueller, National Geographic, Feb. 2014)
Filippo had to work with Lorenzo Ghiberti; who helped ensure that the dome’s construction was carefully made. The building of the dome couldn’t be constructed by testing of ideas, and the inclusion of Ghiberti to the discovery process, might have served as the community analysis for Brunelleschi. He however, kept most of his ideas to himself, which was not a good way to behave
