Flag football is a variation of the American game football. It’s quite an original name. Flag football is used by many recreational leagues and schools for physical education. It is better for the wide use of the public because there is limited physical contact. Tackle football is viewed as dangerous, due to the many injuries often occurring in the game such as concussions and broken bones. Flag football eliminates that risk. The players wear a belt of flags and instead of tackling, the opposite team will yank a flag off belt of the player. The rules of flag football are virtually the same as the rules of normal football, with the exception of the flags themselves. However, because of the nature of the game, there are fewer rushing plays and far more passing and option-style misdirection plays. There are leagues all over the world with both adults and kids. For example, at Ouachita, there are intermural leagues that involve the students and the faculty. In Korea, the National Football League attracts up to 20 teams from middle school students to grown adults. Not only are the ages varied, but there are no rules discriminating against gender. Girls can absolutely play with no restrictions since there is only a small amount of physical contact. There’s an active league in Key West, Florida called the Kelly McGillis class. The officers needed to be uninjured for battles. When the officers went back home to their families they brought flag football home with them. Early leagues began in the 1960s and the first flag football association was formed. The National Touch Football League changed the rules to touching being the way to “tackle” a player instead of the grabbing the flag. Flag football infiltrated colleges and championships started to be held by various universities. Flag football went pro in 1997 and the Professional Flag Football League, Inc. was formed.

Football is possibly too dangerous of a game for young boys and girls to be playing. I am not talking about all forms of football, but more specifically tackle football. Yes, football may possibly be one of America’s loved sport because of the brutality that it consists of; although I believe that there should be an age where kids should start playing such a horrific game. At the age of ten young boys, and girls, should be worrying about who they are going to be playing with outside at recess.
