In many careers there could be different health risk physically or even mentally. An occupation that goes through this everyday is Firefighters. These men and women risk their lives for helping others and for how rewarding it can be,; but that doesn't mean every day is as rewarding as the last. With high rewards comes very high risks. Within the past four years there have been over 300 firefighter deaths in the United States. There have been some new codes and standards made by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) to help protect firefighters; but is it enough? They come out with new tactics and rules every three to five years to create more safe and even more efficient fire attacks. They do this to make firefighting safer; as technology evolves so does the materials they use to make carpets, couches, and any other home items. With all these new materials evolvin; they will burn different than normal wood. Another purpose for the codes and standards is to help prevent pre-incident problems and to make plans to efficiently manage emergencies for the protection of the responding personnel. “In collaboration with the Chicago Fire Department (CFD) and a fire service advisory panel, Ul., has begun a research project to help improve firefighting tactics and reduce firefighter fatalities and injuries.” (Research Underway to Help Improve Firefighting Tactics, Unknown). The National Fire Protection Agency will go through all the rules twice each year to make sure they are still adequate to be enforceding on each fire district. “Even in this era of hard economic times, it is essential that the fire service continue to stay engaged in the code development process to better safeguard our reground work environment. The potential costs of uninvolvement include firefighter injuries and the challenge of playing catch up with the constant changes in our work environment.” (New Codes and Standards Influence Future Tactics, Murphy and Decrane). With more than three hundred plus fire service codes and standards to follow, each company has to be familiar with them to be the safest they can be. Being able to go over all the standards and revise, edit, or even change and add new ones is a start to making the fire service safer in the strategy
