Firefighter Paramedic A firefighter paramedic is a highly educated firefighter who is trained in firefighting tactics and is also trained to be a paramedic when necessary. Firefighters respond to emergencies that threaten life, property, or the environment Paramedics respond to life threatening emergencies for sick/ill or injured people. Most people in this field have another job that they have, simply for the fact that there is a large amount of down time. Additionally is the hours they have are anywhere from 24 hour shifts to 72 hours shifts. The job of a firefighter is not likely to decrease in the near future, simply because of how fast and hot a modern fire will burn. Modern furniture and appliances accelerate how quickly a fire will burn. Some benefits that firefighters have are a “competitive wage, health care coverage, retirement pay and fringe benefits”(Source). Most firefighters are able to live a comfortable life, however newer firefighters often take up two jobs to support themselves or their families. To conclude, most firefighter/paramedics have a very tough job, from fighting fires to saving those in need. The pay long term is very good and the benefits are outstanding. Education is a major part of this job, it takes a knowledgeable person in the science behind fire so that they may fight fires safely and protect their fellow firefighters. An academy is required for all paid firefighters and if anyone volunteers they go through a intern like program so that they get trained by other firefighters that have been there longer.
