1. Explain how film, radio, and television helped change America from a community based culture to shared, homogeneous culture.
Television altered the way we consumed our free time - people began remaining at home, more willingly than going out to the cinema or other places. Television exposed us to many different cultures on a bigger scale than ever before. Without doubt, the influence of television would prompt marked social change in America, as people began to relate to and emulate the values, concepts and trends of many different television programs like sitcoms that features “African Americans, Hispanics, and other culture families.” Television also played a significant role in the evolution of America’s national identity. Television produced an opportunity for uniquely different stories to be played out and allowed Americans to share different cultural experiences. Television also provided a direct channel for American and other cultures values, humor and style to impact society.
Over the decades, radio has confirmed remarkably adaptable to our changing way of life. The Radio played a most important role in the “Blue and jazz combined with country music to formed Rock n Roll.” On commercial radio, frequently played the music of American Rock n Roll, in a determination to capture the new youth market. Once Rock n roll had entered society, its style, boldness and lifestyle would soon follow. The evolving of radios also provided possibilities for marginalized groups to gain access to the airwaves. As for films, they have an enormous influence on culture. Television has given each of us a podium to voice our ideas on all sorts of social and political issues and share information with one another. It has brought out stress-free ways of communication and provided us with simply accessible means to reach out to people in numerous parts of the world. Thanks to technological development, we have been capable to achieve a podium that allows us to present ourselves to the rest of the world. The negative influences of television that are a result of an overexposure to it, are most often talked about. It is accurate to a certain degree that television has affected the society in a negative manner. But, unquestionably, television has proved being an enjoyment.
Television has always been an industry whose profit has always been gained through ads. But in chapter 2 of Jason Mittell’s book, Television and American Culture, Mittell argues that the rise of the profit-driven advertising television model can be traced back through American television history, and that the rise of the profit-driven advertising model of television actually helped to mold American culture both from a historical standpoint and from a social standpoint.
Jeffrey D. Sachs’s essay “ A Nation of Vidiot” focuses on his views about the American relationship with televisions. In his essay explaining why people should avoid watching TV too much. And the author also gives readers a reason to believe in the articles that he wrote. He explained the problem to television advertising used to sell the product and the country's politics. There are fine examples why developing countries the consequences that have ever television were created. And he has to convince his readers when he criticized some of the problems seen too much television can cause people watch television as reduced memory, and body weakness. However, for the children, the TV screens the main tool of the children. The authors also offer TV how difficult and dangerous for television viewers. The Hollywood Blacklisting that followed the Red Scare of the 1950’s forced the media to change in order to survive the scrutinizing committees of the HUAC and various congressional committees that pushed for the social “purging” of America in hopes of searching out the “Reds” which they believed were hiding among them. This change in media came at a time when the public had become extremely receptive to such influences due to the spread of the television and the growth of the middle class who had extra money to spend on luxuries such as going to the movie theatres. The constant barrage of conformity and conservatism as well as xenophobia seen in everyday shows and movies shaped the perception of the average American to believe that liberal or radical ideas were not what normal people supported and believed in.
Many of the technological advancements in entertainment helped people live a much happier and exciting life. In the articles “The Box That Changed America” by Lauren Tarshis and “Television Transformed” also by Lauren Tarshis, they show ways of how americans are drawn to TV because of everything it offers. In the article “Television Transformed” by Lauren Tarshis, it shows how more interesting TV is, and how everyone can watch what they want. The article states, “The number of quality shows is higher than ever, with far more diversity in casting. Families no longer have to fight over what to watch because individual family members can watch what they want on their own devices”(Tarshis 23). This shows how families no longer have to fight, because everyone get watch on their own technology. Plus, now there is a bigger variety of what they can watch.
The media has been a part of the daily life of the American people for the longest time, because of this fact, the media influences the decisions and views of how people should live. One big part of the media that tends to start to develop a sense of how the day-to-day American should live is Disney. Since kids are the main source of Disney’s billion dollar industry children have become an important dimension of the social theory (Giroux 1999: 65). “Within this context, television emerges as a consumer-oriented medium that reflects advertisers’ desire to reach a young, upscale, and primarily White audience” (Goodale1999; Henderson and Baldasty 2003: 100). As a result other races and ethnic groups other than white Americans are often put aside when it comes to the social media view of how Americans should live.

I never realized the impact television has had on my family until recently. My parents divorced eleven years ago, resulting in my sisters and I being raised in a single parent household. My mom decided to go back to school and get her degree; soon after she met the man she would marry and become our stepdad. Our family transformed from a nuclear family, to a single parent family to a mixed family. Media has had many changes in the past years. Growing up I remember my mom saying that we were lucky to have color televisions now. She would say that when she was younger she would have to hear her stories and games over the radio because back then there was no televisions. Another way of getting entertained was reading stories. The newspaper and the radio was the only way of getting news back then. I thought it was funny when my mom told me that since they were one of the few families that had a television in the neighborhood, she would charge the kids 10 cents to watch television in her house. Americans were now able to listen to radios podcast and watch shows in the comfort of their own homes. They idolized the new celebrities and movie stars, who greatly influenced cultural advancement.
